I would love to see a division rival make a bad trade for Hamels. Long term that is very good for us I think.

The only team with the prospects and/or salary flexibility to do so was probably Houston

Oakland wouldn't pay him and don't have the prospects even if they would and the Angels/Mariners don't have the prospects

We have the prospects to get almost anybody, but I'm very cagey on the thought of Hamels. I would have to be very pleasantly surprised to be ok with it. The only way I see them doing it is if they don't think they can extend Darvish, and even then I'm against it.

I know we do, I was speaking of division rival swooping in and getting it done, which I don't see... especially since Houston is out

I know. I was just commenting that we're in a unique position that we really shouldn't be quick to squander. We've got many highly touted prospects that look like they're all going to be major league ready near the same time. Guys with legitimate major league talent. With Choo and Andrus' albatross contracts hanging over our heads it's important to be smart with our young players who will be controllable for a long while.

Would love seeing LAA -- his 'near' hometown team -- take on that $98mil contract. LAA is renown for long term high risk contracts. It's in their genes.

It would be right in their wheelhouse. I know their far system is trash. Do they even have a top 50 prospect? They'd probably be willing to take on the entire contract if Philly is willing to take meh prospects in return.

Baseball America Top 100
42. Andrew Heaney lhp Angels

Haney's the only LAA prospect in Top 100.

BTW Jake Thompson is #43 ... right behind Heaney (Gallo, Alfaro and Chi Chi are other TEX prospects in BBA Top 100)

Not even comparable talent wise
I know. Which means we'd be giving up that much more. I want no part of any trade that involves our top 4 prospects unless the deal is too obvious to pass up.

I would much rather trade for bullpen help than Hamels. I wouldn't mind adding an impact RH bat to the order

In terms of his salary, I think you guys are a bit off when it comes to labeling his contract as a bad one. After this year, he's owed around $75 Million over 3 years (with an option for a 4th). That's less than James Shields signed for with San Diego and Hamels is a year younger and a better pitcher than Shields. Plus, even if we were to get 1-2 great years out of him, we would only have to eat bad salary for one season. So as far as salary goes, getting an ace for 3 years at just under $25 Million is not bad at all.

Also, as far as how he fits in, that shouldn't be a question mark either. He's an ace. He is better than anyone currently on the team. You "make room" for a guy as good as Hamels. Having a legit ace is never a concern. We don't know for sure how Holland or Perez will return. Maybe Harrison's career is over. Maybe Wandy starts pitching like 2013-2014 Wandy. Maybe Colby has to go back on the DL. He isn't getting any younger. Plus there's the big question of whether we secure Darvish long term. If he bolts, wouldn't it be nice to have a legit ace to carry the staff for the next couple of years?

*** Obviously though, all of the above hinges on what Philly would get in return. I'd be ok parting with one or maybe two of our better prospects, but if they will only settle for a massive overpay, then I would say no way and just roll with what we've got.

Salary and team fit, Hamels is great. Trade cost? Maybe, maybe not.
