From Evan Grant:

All-Star catcher Jonah Heim said he got an optimistic second opinion about the torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. Heim saw Arizona-based hand specialist Dr. Don Sheridan on Tuesday to consult on the injury the Rangers have announced as a sprained tendon. Heim also received a cortisone injection to help with inflammation and the wrap on his wrist was much less bulky on Wednesday.

Heim said the surgeon told him he’d seen “much worse,” cases and suggested it was possible for him to play through the injury and either postpone repair surgery until the offseason or perhaps avoid it entirely. One thing that may help Heim: As a switch hitter, he could potentially swing only from the left side, which would not irritate the wrist as much. It is his dominant wrist in a right-handed swing.

“All I’m asking for is a chance,” Heim said. “It’s not a complete tear, so that was good.”

Manager Bruce Bochy said Heim could begin taking some dry swings - those that don’t involve a ball - next week. The Rangers did, however, acquire Austin Hedges from Pittsburgh just ahead of the trade deadline Tuesday to help stabilize the catching situation. Hedges is expected to make his Rangers debut on Friday.
