They are going into his 5th year at a still reasonable number but yeah, tough decision for them. Maybe the FT? I don't know but it's hard to see him being worth a huge extension.

If they believe in him, he's going to get the same $50m/yr range deal.

Looking back, people thought the Mahommes deal was nuts and then the Watson/Burrow.Herbert deals, but the market continues to climb. Today's deals seem nuts but 2 or 3 years from now they will probably look like a bargain. The next guy that is truly proven to sign and wants to set a benchmark will. So the question is what is the benchmark and can they somehow get less than 5 years to give them a chance at setting the market again. Crazy times, but I don't see why they shouldn't try to take advantage.

They’re dragging it out to fuck over the kid. Hate to see it.
Why would they want to fuck over the kid? They got a slew of good players they would like to keep but of course the players want to be shown the money. So they are trying to figure out the best course, likely can't pay all of them. Having more good players then you can afford to resign is a good problem according to some, but it's difficult right?

He is still under contract and they can franchise tag him next season. Aiyuk is just looking to find other teams who are willing to pay him more to put pressure on the 49ers to show other teams think he is also worth more than $26m/year

Some think the NFL has no cap and all the players can be max paid.

The market has been set and they don’t want to pay him. They’re handcuffing where he can go by holding this process out so long. He’s going to have to risk injury on the last year of his deal. Shitty situation for a player to be in.

Ayuik is taking great risk in playing this year for half his market value. He’s earned his pay day. All year long on this board Niners fans hype this guy up as a top 5 WR…until it’s time to pay the man.

All players take that risk. Teams have to weigh the other contracts whether to renew early or not.

The fifth year option is a shitty situation for the player. They have little to no recompense. The team has 100% of the decision. I understand the rule. It’s just shitty. Good organizations pay their players fair market value. When they do, they’re likely to restructure so that the team can gain cap space later so that their teammates can get paid when they earn it. Ayuik is worth 25-28 million per year. Pay the rate or deal the man to a spot that is willing to pay him the rate.

Blame the CBA not the teams.

I don't blame Aiyuk. I don't blame the 49ers. The NFL has a crappy system in place that underpays good players in years 3, 4, & 5 so that the top end veterans can be overpaid.
