Let's say that Smith decides to retire but that retirement is based upon a medical settlement.

1. Does such a settlement clear cap space or will the settlement amount count against said cap?

2. Are subsequent years voided with this type of settlement or can the amount be spread over several years.

3. Is it possible for a team to void guaranteed monies if team doctor's deem a player no longer physically fit to play?

4. Tell me about reporting for camp and how reporting/ participation or other bonuses factor into guaranteed contracts.

5. What options does this team have with respect to the Alex Smith injury? Especially if he can't pass a physical exam.

6. I'm almost 100% sure that Smith doesn't retire for the 2019 season, but, what happens if he does? Doesn't that void his contract or no?

I Need some help with these questions, anyone have answers?

Sty, here is what I think. It’s by no means 100% sure.

I believe that this medical settlement is already addressed in the current agreement. I think it’s somethijng like $22M for 2019 and $21m for 2020. So if he is deemed medically unfit, this is the Team's exposure. Everything else you have wondered about is possible, it is just a matter of the deal.

Now, the team is going to push hard for him to come back. If he decides not, then the deal could be voided, as smith is the one retiring.

So smith will be all all OTAs, camps, etc, even if he is just getting treatment. He has to appear he is determined to come back and fulfill his obligations of the contract. There is zero chance that he will be ready to play the first game. Realistically, he could miss at least half the season. So the team will have tough choices. The they PUP him, IR him, or cut him? Either way, they are paying him at least $22M next year. All of which will count against the cap. Ouch.

I think Smith will do as j_y mentioned and remain with the team through all spring and summer activities and then the Skins can decide how they will handle it be it PUP, IR etc.

If you were injured on the job you aren't going to toss out millions due to an injury you incurred on the job. I am no cap specialist but I think we have a fairly dent in the cap for the next couple of years.

I feel for the guy. Hell of an injury. As mentioned earlier my nephew had just one of the two bones broke like that a couple of years ago. The closest he has come to playing since was hanging out with Nick Nelson his former HS teammate on the sideline during the game with Oakland. Smith was not playing well at all but I wouldn't wish an injury like that on anyone.

for the next 2 years you have essentially 2 yrs of dead cap space .

the FO panicked with this move and has set this franchise back 2-4 years
