i went to the dentist monday and had to 2 fillings on molars redone on one side of my mouth because i grind the shit out of my teeth while i sleep ... even with a splint/nightguard ... I have 2 other fillings that need redoing on the other side of my mouth which is scheduled for first week of Jan

on mondays my original dentist is in the office ... old japanese guy who is pretty much retired but i guess he comes in once a week to keep the mind sharp (or maybe inflict pain) ... freezes the right side of my mouth telling me how he actually hasnt worked in a month cause he was in Maui golfing ... leaves the room to take a call, comes back to me and says "Hey gotta go, see you in 6" and says the other dentist will do the fillings

nurse comes in and starts putting the dental dam on the other side of my mouth ... wtf? "we were scheduled to do the left side but i guess Dr Nakamura had another plan"

appointment was at 3pm, whole right side of my mouth jaw, tongue was numb til 9pm ... thanks doc

I had a root canal when I was 11 or 12 and a couple years ago it went bad, bad meaning there was a large abscess under the crown that was making the gum bulge out. Amazingly it didnt hurt at all. I had an option of whether to re-do the root canal which often has limited success or yank it. Remembering the 'fun' from 30 years ago I told them to pull it. As he pulled it, it didnt hurt but I winced when he was telling me it looked great because that all the 'puss and stuff' stayed right in the little bulge it created.

Also I am a mutant, I had an impacted wisdom tooth and when they x-rayed me to check the others they found I only had 3 wisdom teeth. Lamest mutant ever.

Have you ever seen anyone about that (the teeth grinding)? I do that too, and I can't really find a cure. I've been told to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and chewing gum/hard candy. Do you have any info or tips? (aside from keep your mouth away from your wife's nipples during sleep)

i grind as well. Cracked a recent onlay from it, dammit. Possibly responsible for my fun day today as well.
Dentist said I need to address it before 1000's of $$ of dental work is ruined and more created.

Giving up caffeine is NOT an option!!
Stress related is more likely, and only so much I can do about that. :-/

Grinding at night, so just started using a night guard.

Tried the athletic style mouthguard, didn't like it, didn't like having it over my front teeth, just not comfortalbe.

so now trying a smaller deal (still over the counter)

Yeah, I use the athletic style too. I don't really mind it, although it's impossible to breathe if you have a cold. I'd rather just not grind my teeth, but yeah I'm not dropping the coffee. I don't really drink a lot of pop, and I quit booze about a year ago. But the grinding hasn't stopped.

I really dont know who to see other than my dentist lol ... psychiatrist? lol

I drink coffee, alcohol socially and dont really chew gum, hard candy or drink pop at all. And i cant really say my life is stressful although at my last visit for cleaning the hygenist played amateur pyschologist asking me for a rundown of my life and in her expert medical opinion she surmised i live a stressful life lol

The splint i use is one made by my dentist (or I think it got sent away). They took a mold of my teeth and i got a hard resin-like retainer-like tooth protector. Its not like one of those malleable night guards that are sold over the counter that you boil in hot water and put it in your mouth to shape it to your teeth and gums.

I wear the thing every night and i know the dentist doesnt believe me because like i posted earlier Ive worn down 2 fillings on my right molars and cracked 2 fillings on my left molars. i also have kinda like ridges/valleys at the gum line on a couple of teeth caused by the torsion I create when I grind (slowly chipping enamel off the teeth). I wear the fucking thing every night and some mornings i wake up with bigtime jaw/head aches. now Dentist suggested going with a softer over the counter guard.

The one thing I know is this grinding all started when i got heavy into lifting weights in my mid 20's. Im not hardcore like i used to be but maybe this is some sort of residual OCD thing? lol

maybe ... must ... drink ... more ... milk
