If you don't see the value of Pronger now, you will come playoff time, I can promise you that.

Flyers were 9-4-0 without Pronger. Looking at peripherals, the PP and PK were both completely unchanged without him, and the winning percentage was about .010 worse without him.

Kinda throws a wrench into the whole "we can't afford to trade anyone from our defense because we can't replace them" theory. Bartulis and Walker replaced Pronger quite well, and everyone seems to think Pronger is our best defenseman.

I got ambushed in the Trade JvR thread for saying trade Carle instead, saying the defense couldn't stand to lose Carle or anyone from the top 6 without a huge letdown. My assertion is that if we can lose our most decorated defenseman for a month and not have any drop in PP, PK, or wins, why can't we trade our 5th best defenseman?

o got ya. yeah i see what your saying. i am not the biggest carle fan either and he seems to be highly touted around the league, would probably fetch a nicer return. that being said it is kind of nice to have that depth, so i think they will probably end up moving walker or bartulis.

i honestly dont expect them to make much of a move with how we are playing.

I get what you are saying, but I don't think you can use those numbers as an adequate assessment of his worth. Pronger's biggest dividends come when the playoffs roll around and he goes into beast mode.

I've been busting the balls of a few Penguin fan friends of mine because they always seem to go on major win streaks when Cindy misses time due to injury ... does that mean that they are a better team without the crybaby?

Pronger could have prevented the puck from ever crossing into our defensive zone last playoffs when he was on the ice, broken the legs of every single player on the other teams, blocked every shot attempted, and I still say the most valuable part of him wouldn't have been how good he was defensively as much as how he was keeping our third D-line off the ice.

They were BAD.

Lifetime Playoff Pronger: .706 pts per game, 2.36 shots per game, 6.5% shooting percentage, 1.89 penalty minutes per game and a +43 in only 170 games.

2009/10 Regular Season Pronger: .671 pts per game, 2.13 shots per game, 5.7% shooting percentage, .96 penalty minutes per game and a +22 in 82 games.

2009/10 Playoff Pronger: .783 pts per game, 1.78 shots per game, 9.8% shooting percentage, 1.57 penalty minutes per game and a +5 in 23 games.

Someone please tell me the fucking trend here so we can end this nonsense once and for all...

I'll give you a hint. The very best players in the Nhl raise their level of play when they're in the pressure cooker and everything is on the line. Chris Pronger is one of those players.

One might also conclude from these statistics that Pronger is a much better player when he has that snarl to his game, which is often in the playoffs, when it matters.

first off, i'm gunna say you need to calm down, people have different opinions than you.. all i have stated the entire time is that he is overrated defensively, and those numbers don't go that far in disproving me.. if you look at the +/- on a per game basis over his career, which you seem to think shows how amazing he is, he's a +.15/game during the regular season and a +.25/game during the playoffs, while that's pretty solid, its not AMAZING.. and its really not a HUGE difference between the playoffs and the regular season..

however, he's been better in the past when he was younger, and did actually hit more often.. the key thing to point out here is he was a +5 in 23 games last year in the playoffs.. talk about him being a beast offensively or in a leadership role, but a +5 in 23 games really isn't that good defensively.. and go ahead and talk about how he played against the top lines, bla bla bla, if he was the greatest thing ever and 'the reason' they made it as far as they did last year, he would have a higher +/- than 5

just watch him defensively over the next month or so, and i'll even say wait a couple games cause his injury will slow him down even more.. but seriously watch him defensively and you'll see he's not what he used to be defensively and doesn't deserve all the credit he gets.. carle deserves a lot of it, because carle covers pronger's ass frequently

i'm not saying is terrible, i'm not saying he's bad, i'm not even saying i dont want him on the team.. all i'm saying is that he gets way more credit for this team being good than he deserves

The bottom line is that you can say whatever you want -- the teams that Pronger plays on just seem to win hockey games. If you really want to break down every minute stat to "prove" that he's worthless, have at it. A guy that's taken 3 different teams to the SCF in his career has to be doing something right.
