Waaay more confident. Way, wayyyyy more confident,” is how 2021 first-round pick Jamin Davis described his vibe entering his sophomore campaign. It’s fair to buy that assessment. Coaches and teammates made such claims about the physically gifted linebacker who was clearly overmatched as an NFL rookie.

“He’s taken a lot of big steps from last year,” LB Cole Holcomb said. “Definitely got a better grasp on the defense. Playing outside I feel like it’s pretty natural for him. He’s taken the right steps on what he needs to do.”

That confidence translated into a more assured Davis during his first media session of the offseason program with direct, standing tall responses about his first season (“Definitely a humbling experience.”) and how his refound conviction translates to the field.

“Play speed by a mile,” Davis said. “Just being out there and not thinking twice about anything, just going out there and … knowing your stuff … and just going out there playing fast.”
“He’s much more decisive,” Commanders analyst and former NFL tight end Logan Paulsen said. “Last year … (Jamin) looked lost.”

Davis is poised to play often alongside Holcomb as the two primary linebackers for a defense that primarily uses five or more defensive backs. Having the 234-pounder who ran a 4.47 40-yard time pre-draft harness his physical tools within the context of the game plan might be the biggest positive impact for the defense this side of a healthy Chase Young.

“You watch Jamin move around and you feel good about who Jamin is right now,” Rivera said. “He’s had a good spring and that’s an awesome thing.”

Now let’s put some context into this praise. For whatever strides forward Davis flashed during the offseason program, he’s not a core piece yet.

Rotation and rest aside, nine defenders warrant every-snap status. That’s the starting line and secondary plus Holcomb. Davis as the other starting linebacker is more about potential and lack of roster depth.

this is good news if he can keep it up

Undrafted free agent Tre Walker, Idaho’s leading tackler last season, jumped a route to intercept a Sam Howell pass last week. Drew White recorded 191 tackles as a three-year starter at Notre Dame. De’Jon Harris and Milo Eifler, one-year vets who spent time here last season, still fall under the “young guy” category as does UDFA Bryce Notree.

There’s a world where one of these players sneaks onto the roster. Doing so with ample uncertainty behind the primary starters when one of those starters (Davis) remains a work in progress is a bit unnerving.

There will be three quarterbacks regardless, and Sam Howell delivered perhaps the best single pass among those passers this offseason. The fifth-round pick with a strong arm targeted wide receiver Kelvin Harmon along the sideline on Day 2 of minicamp and deftly fit the toss over and between multiple defenders for a completion. Howell was also erratic passing and looked awkward mechanically in the pocket sometimes. The QB learning curve is real. Howell is not part of the 2022 playing plan with Taylor Heinicke behind Wentz and, therefore, won’t be rushed.

inconsistent at this point but promising

Jamin might be fine. Some guys take a year or two get there.

If they don't re-sign him they are absolutely dumb not to trade him they will end up letting him walk next offseason for a measly comp pick
