There has been and continues to be much talk around the future of Kirk Cousins, but I thought that it might serve us well to take a moment and look at where the team stands after the second year of this rebuild. So here is my question. (Thanks for the idea @RFan)

Did this team improve, remain about the same, or, take a step back from where it left off at the end of the 2015 season?

*please don't turn this into another Cousins debate, we have plenty of those already!! Thanks

It actually stayed the same. I predicted 10-6 and a playoff win. So I am pretty disappointed right now.

As a whole the team improved even though wins and losses dont show it. We did play a higher grade of opponent, and for the most part had a good showing even in most of the losses.

Unit by Unit

The Offense improved, but this may be a mute point if we lose two starting WR's and for some reason dont resign Davis. There are some upgrades needed on the nit, mainly on the O-line and possibly a higher quality RB. I like Fat Rob, kid has heart and will give his all, but we might need some one with a bit more to give.

Defense.... Statistically they regressed. And from a talent stand point, I have said before and i will say again... we see young guys come here as rookies and get their freak on purely on raw talent. But too many cases of year two and Barry coaching that raw talent right out of them. The defense truly is the weakest link of this team.

Special teams.... Have to say a bit of a regression here as well. Mainly from the place kicker. He missed what three extra points this season?? Maybe he just got in a funk, if so he needs to go wash his ass and get this shit out of his system quick.

Coaching..... Hard to peg this one. You know my thoughts on Barry. McVey is getting all kinds of love at the moment.. but I do still question his ability when it comes to play calling. Too much passing and not nearly enough balance at times in the year. Jay and clock management... we need an assistant in charge of time out and game management, because at times you can almost see the squirrel turning as Jay considers calling a time out, then not as e waste another 30 seconds of clock time.

I'm on board with this assessment top to bottom but would add 1 more component to the mix. WTF do we still have Allen around for? We have a cap guru, a HC, a GM and owner.

Some one has to be there to kiss Danny's ass on demand. Bruce seems good at it.

Allen might be one of the most important guys in the building. He is the go between Dan and the rest of the team. I would hate to think what might happen without him.

I agree largely with what shark just said.

Next year is a big giant guess. Who knows who or what we are going to have. :noidea:

Yep - should be an interesting & fun offseason. I would imagine that they will get major pushback from the fanbase if either of these occur - 1. they don't resign Cousins & 2. they don't draft predominately for defense in the draft. A major challenge for the FO this offseason.

I'm with you on this, however, it was just a season ago that we all thought that SM would go nearly all in towards fixing our defense. Your thoughts on how much of the draft and free agency should be applied towards that end this time around? (Damn just thought of another thread question....thanks)

Thats going ot depend on how we handle the re signings both on Offense and defense. If we end up losing JAckson, Garcon, Davis and being on a one year lase at QB... I find it kind of hard to think we will dedicate alot to the defense.

I know...right, As we post back and forth there is a large imbalance between what's been spent on Offense vs Defense. Despite the cap room SM and BA are going to have to do some mighty good architectural work in drawing exactly where that line is best for this organization. Could it be that we already suspect that things won't change much and must prepare ourselves for the ole' fingers crossed defense?

We could devote every pick to the defense and its still 3 years shy of being a GOOD defense. I think if we keep the offense together, and possibly upgrade the line.... a middle of the pack defense would get us 2-3 of those wins that just slipped through our fingers the last two years. I cant speak for how the GM would do it, but a concentrated approach might be the best medicine for this team.

Realize we cant fix all three levels of the Defense at once, work on the biggest issue first. Fix the D-line, resign Galette but also realize he might not give you shit so dont go nuts on payment. Move Cravens to SS and figure we are going to have to wait a year to get an impact FS and another ILB.

Bring in a LG and at least open up center and RT to camp competition. Same with RB, but it hinges on (yes we might have to OVERPAY) bringing back Jackson, Garcon and Davis. Well and the QB.

ok i was going to start a thread about this but sty beat me to it so bare with me this will be long

first we came off a playoff year as champion of a crappy division . this is where expectations from the fan base started to go off a cliff . we entered this year in year 2 of a rebuild . we had/have a lot of holes so lets go over them

d/line ILb Safety rb te c og and overall team depth

d/line no improvement here , ioman might be a BU but really its stop gap ville
ILB no improvement spaight dooesnt appear to be an answer
safety if cravens moves over their then we have one spot filled , blackmon is a decent BU . losing jarret hurts that unit
RB it improved it just needs to be used more kelly is a good back
C long appears to be a viable starter for us in year one
OG kujo got some snaps but he needs another year of seasoning
depth wr Te RB o/line with nsexy and sullivan appear ok , defensively CB seems to be the only area we have depth

so by my count we had success in 3 areas RB TE and C the rest are still in flux

next just what are we ? last season at the beginning of the year i had us contending for a playoff birth ( we did ) i also said we werent ready to play with the big boys yet . we lacked depth and talent to do so . i emphasized this team would cock tease us because it will be on the cusp but it would fall short against good teams this team did exactly that , it cock teased us and now we have a mad fan base because they thought with emotion and did not step back and take a look at whats real . the fact we still didnt have the talent to be a year in year out winner

now for the draft , we didnt get what we could from the draft . MKD did his MK impression of being injured . he is talking like being ready by mid off season . the jury is still out on him but another year of this and bustdom is his likely path

cravens had a productive year for a 2nd round pick set back by injuries i think he has a solid future

fuller was thrown in as the slot CB . it was a learning experience to say the least however i think he has a future with us with a good off season

ionman looks like a career rotational guy at best , he may not make the team next year

sudfeld has some nice physical tools but he was mechanical . next off season will be key for him if he is to have a future

we need an effective draft this year

the biggest thing we need to do going forward is to have stability at qb starting over at qb will set this rebuild back . i dont think you can sign a romo because he will be 37 and he needs a team built to win now . cutler is an INT machine , taylor isnt accurate enough and he will frustrate us just as much . the draft has some RG3 clones and maybe a carson wentz wannabee or 2 certainly another set back for our rebuild

the second biggest thing we need is some help on defense . you cant win consistently with a bottom tier defense . perhaps an avg defense you cant but certainly not one like ours we need talent and coaching on this side of the ball and it could take a draft or 2 to get there

and lastly we need to understand what we are . we are 17-14 -1 the last 2 seasons . it makes us an avg football team . middle of the pack , pedestrian . we arent a perennial contender on the verge of dynasty status . we are heading into year 3 of a rebuild . i think if we keep most of our corp , fill a few holes on defense this off season we should be able to take another positive step

Good Thread, and responses so far!

I thought they regressed slightly, and I'm not sure if that had to do with a lost sense of urgency, lack of preparation or the total decimation of the starters on defense.
Some fluke things happened to the Redskins, but Carolina was a must win.
Both the offense and defense, looked indecisive in critical situations.
The red zone inefficiencies never got corrected, defending 3rd and 10,15,18 never got corrected.
And gambling on average DEs, average RBs, and never getting a true NT, prevented them from competing
with their rivals in the division.

On the bright side, despite all of that...they JUST missed the playoffs.

I think we have to be pretty happy overall with the season. I think most people realized last year was a bit lucky that we won the division and that with a harder schedule we might see a decrease in wins. But the offense stayed productive, and we competed for a playoff spot to the very last minute of the season. Also notched our second straight winning season. Overall those are pretty good things. We have a solid team that can win games. But now we have to take the next step. I think the obvious approach is as shark said to build the defense to the point where its competent. We arent on the brink of becoming a juggernaut. But a league average defense with this very good offense could be a very good team. So target DL in FA if we can. Ive seen some names thrown about but I havent actually looked at who will be a FA yet. And then in the draft hopefully go BPA on the defensive side of the ball. I believe it should be a good class for DL prospects so hopefully we can add some game changers there. We have corners who could be very good if the front 7 can create pressure so I think that should be our focus if possible.

To answer your question, Im not sure we were much better than last year. Maybe a little better with Norman on defense. But we didnt get the contributions we hoped for from Doctson, Cravens, and Preston Smith. They are all young and talented though so I think the arrow is pointed up.

Well there are the statistics, a mixed bag to be sure, but what about the sniff test. Keep in mind that everyone's sniffer responds differently.

Offensively, it sort of feels like we've gotten better but to me where it counts most is in scoring. In a game where having one point or more greater than your opponent becomes the determinate factor in winning there was really not that much difference between seasons. In fact the 2015 team scored exactly one more touchdown more than the 2016 team. What confuses the senses is in the way they were able to move the ball between twenty yard lines this year and it seemed as if that they played on shorter fields a year ago.

Again, I'm not the most fluent person when it comes to statistics, however, after comparing our defensive statistics from last season to this one and finding that they were remarkably close to one another I'll have to conclude that Offensively we did not improve. The good news is that we also didn't regress.

As noted we didn't do much to distinguish this year's defense from last years. It did feel as if our defense was a more underachieving unit this season, even though statistics nearly mirror the 2015 team. As we all know now, our coaches paid for this static outcome. Firing them was probably best for everyone, however, with that comes more scrutiny on our GM and HC who together must bring in better talent and get better productivity from the players that they already have employed here or suffer the same fate.

Failing to address glaring needs on defense last year cannot be SOP this year, nor can there be no clearly defined improvements on the field. After two seasons of this rebuild.

"Well, at least it's not as bad as it once was"........"If only the team had a running game"......."with an average defense the team could have.........." "If (insert name here) would have or didn't ( fill in event here) then the team would/could have.........," "We have to do a better job coaching them" and others have been common refrains all season long from fans, coaches and others that follow this team. In an odd way all of these things CAN be seen, in a certain light, as signs of improvement based on where this NFL entry has been. For me however, very spotty improvements and a general statistical mirror of the two seasons indicates that there has not been much progress at all, just more of the same.

"If (insert name here) would have or didn't ( fill in event here) then the team would/could have.........," "We have to do a better job coaching them" and others have been common refrains all season long from fans, coaches and others that follow this team. In an odd way all of these things CAN be seen, in a certain light, as signs of improvement based on where this NFL entry has been. For me however, very spotty improvements and a general statistical mirror of the two seasons indicates that there has not been much progress at all, just more of the same.

Special teams are much more than the FG kicker. For years our coverage teams were horrible, constamtly giving up big returns that cost us games. The return game was equally bad, not only did they hardly ever flip the field or win a game with a big return they often forced the offense to set up at the 10 after a penalty. These areas are vastly improved, we went from cringing every time a kick was in the air to really believing Crowder will do something and not worrying so much about the cverage. This has been a huge positive.

ok i was going to start a thread about this but sty beat me to it so bare with me this will be long

first we came off a playoff year as champion of a crappy division . this is where expectations from the fan base started to go off a cliff . we entered this year in year 2 of a rebuild . we had/have a lot of holes so lets go over them

d/line ILb Safety rb te c og and overall team depth

d/line no improvement here , ioman might be a BU but really its stop gap ville

This is a good post Dad, well done. A few comments:

Our run game was a disaster, simply pathetic on short yardage. What I am getting at is replacing our favorite whipping boy at LG may not be the total solution. I am starting to wonder if Long really is a good center seeing as we get stuffed on runs to the right as well as the left.

"we didn't get what we could from the draft" is the understatement of the year. I can count exactly one impactful play, the pick by Cravens, from this draft class for an entire season.. I pointed this out months ago and someone threw back Doctson's long pass completion, a play where he ran down uncovered and Kirk found him late as his 4th read. This is a play a junior college receiver could make. They got esentially zero contribution from an entire rookie class and that simply can not happen. This does not mean I am giving up on them, Doctson has the potential to be a game changer and too early to tell on the others. But it had a huge impact on our season.

I agree Kelly is a decent back but as I said if you compare him objectively with all the starting running backs throughout the league he is clearly below average. He has no burst, we can do better but he is far down the list of problems. Chris Thompson is the most underrated player on this team, he is fantastic in so many ways so all in all we are OK in the backfield

Also agree that Spaight is not a starter, too bad I was calling for him to get some time. I think Will Compton is fine with the right defense but we really need a stud with speed next to him.

Great point about how they really missed Jarret, we have never really discussed this before as he is clearly a forgotten man. Is there any hope for a comeback or has that ship sailed?

But the bottom line is after decades of losing we had back to back winning seasons and this is only year 2. We are clearly on the right path provided we don't screw up the QB situation.
