With the new CBA it's not 50/50 on the post June 1st cuts. Only That years portion of the dead money stays in that year and the rest of the dead money moves to the next year.

Not much difference though.

16 million compared to 8.7 ..... 700,000 is the difference

Ware is very interesting. If you think (like me) he can get healthy and we get that guy from the preseason and beginning of the year you keep him. If you think he will never be the same guy again you cut him. The tricky part is if we try to keep him, but at a lesser salary.

The numbers ignoring his workout bonus because I don't know the details on that are about $16M if we keep him and do nothing - no chance of this IMO. Cut him before June 1st and its an $8.6M hit in 2014 and nothing in future years - very little chance of this. Cut him post 6/1 and its a $3.8M hit in 2014 and then a $5.3M hit in 2015 - most likely scenario IF he is cut. Most likely scenario overall IMO is we keep him and have some kind of restructure. If we only get one more year out of him, this could hurt us in the future as we just move this problem out one year. If we can get two more years out of him, then a restructure (even if just moving salary this year to bonus) can work out well for us.

I think he can be a beast .... like he was to start the season..... IF
He's not the only man defenses have to prepare for
It's kinda hard to overlook ....... He owned the best player on our team (Smith) until he was hurt.

One of the things I have considered with him ... and wondered if he would even do ....
Cut him ...... pay him as you would a cut player
But resign him .... to a 2 year very reasonable contract
The Steelers and other teams have done that in the past ....... Pretty much would come down to his loyalty to this team .... or if he thinks he has a better chance to go somewhere else and win a ring

At his age and health the last two years..... any team signing him .... he wont get a big contract... new scheme to learn .... smart move would be to do that and stay with us

Exactly. I repeated a Parcells quote last week here that stresses that exact point...if you have one pass rusher, you have no pass rushers. Any team can stop any guy if that's all they have to worry about.

Ware received a signing bonus in 2009 That bonus no longer affects the contract so i'll leave it out of the explanation for the purposes of trying to keep things less complex.

In 2011 Ware converted his $7.2M salary to a $685K salary with a bonus of $6,515,000. He received all of the money. The bonus counts over 5 years for cap purposes, ($1,303,000 per year). There's no money left to pay to Ware but only the 1st part of the bonus was accounted for. The other 4 parts are dead money. His cap figure in 2011 was $685K + his $500K work-out bonus + the 1st $1,303,000. The dead money figure was the 4 lots of $1,303,000. If he had been released before June 1st 2012 all of that $5,212,000 would have counted towards the 2012 cap. If he had been released after June 1st 2012 $1,303,000 would have counted towards 2012 and $3,909,000 would have counted towards 2013

In 2012 Ware converted his $4.5M salary to a $685K salary with a bonus of $3,675,000. He received all of the money. The bonus counts over 4 years for cap purposes, ($918,750 per year). There's no money left to pay to Ware but only the 1st part of the 2nd bonus was accounted for. The other 3 parts are dead money. His cap figure in 2012 was $685K + his $500K work-out bonus + the 2nd $1,303,000 + the 1st $918,750. The remaining 3 lots of $1,303,000 and $918,750 are dead money. If he had been released before June 1st 2013 all of that $6,665,250 would have counted towards the 2013 cap. If he had been released after June 1st 2013 the 3rd $1,303,000 and 2nd $918,750 would have counted towards 2013 and $4,443,500 would have counted towards 2014

In 2013 Ware converted his $6M salary to a $840K salary with a bonus of $5,160,000. He received all the money. The bonus counts over 5 years for cap purposes, ($1.032,000 per year). There's no money left to pay to Ware but only the 1st part of the 3rd bonus was accounted for. The other 4 parts are dead money. His cap figure in 2013 was $840K + his $0 work-out bonus, (declined) + the 3rd $1,303,000 + the 2nd $918,750 + the 1st $1,032,000.

The only bonus he'll be due is a $500K work-out bonus. All his previous money has been paid in full.

In 2014 his salary is $12,250,000. His cap figure will include his salary + $500K work-out bonus + the 4th $1,303,000 + the 3rd $918,750 + the 2nd $1,032,000.

His 2014 cap will be his salary + $500K work-out bonus + $3,253,000.

His 2015 cap will be his salary + the 5th & final $1,303,000 + the 4th & final $918,750 + the 3rd $1,032,000.

His 2015 cap will be his salary + $3,253,000.

His 2016 cap will be his salary + the 4th $1,032,000.

His 2017 cap will be his salary + the 5th & final $1,032,000.

He has dead money figures of $3,253,000 in 2014 and 2015. He has dead money figures of $1,032,000 in 2016 and 2017. The total amount of dead money is $8,571,500.

If he is released before the start of the NFL year all of the dead money will be counted in 2014. Obviously he wouldn't be paid any of his non-guaranteed $12,250,000 salary. His 2014 cap figure would be $8,571,500. If he is on the roster at the start of the year he will count as $12,250,000 + $500K work-out bonus + only the 2014 dead money, ($3,253,000) which would be $16,003,750. Non-guaranteed salaries don't become guaranteed until the 1st game of the season in September BUT the current season dead money figure becomes frozen as of June 1st and changes that would have taken place due to cuts and trades don't take place until the following year. Hypothetically if Ware was cut on June 2nd he would count as $3,253,000 towards the 2014 cap and $5,317,000 towards the 2015 cap. Not a good option to use with Ware but it's possible with Austin and Carr.

...but believe what you want.

according to a site I look at Carr's dead money would be 16,868,000. Our dead money & PS players is 12.5 closer to 12.6 mil. Austin cutting pre june 1st would count 7,855,600. bringing us around 20.4 mil. No way we are cutting Carr.

wouldn't want to touch Carr's contract because that contract sucks anyways. But we might be restructuring that anyways as well as Scandrick who just signed. Carr's contract really hurts us & restructuring it would make it even worse later. So I am not a fan of it, but it is a spot to save a bunch in a hurry if they need too.
At Wittens age, I would let his contract play out without touching it. At least we are still paying for production there.

Which is why I said you can't cut Carr BEFORE June 1st! If he's going to be cut it'll happen AFTER June 1st.

Carr's total dead money is $16,868,000. $4,717.000 will count towards the 2014 cap REGARDLESS of what the Cowboys do! Cut him, keep him, trade, him, suspend him! It doesn't matter. Cutting him BEFORE June 1st will bring the remaining $12,151,000 into 2014. That would be suicidally stupid. Since he can't be cut or traded before June 1st 2014 it will mean that the next $4,717,000, (due to be accounted for in 2015), will become set in stone. Cutting Carr AFTER June 1st 2014 will bring forward the remaining $7,434,000 into 2015.

It's not a free ride. You have to account for all of the $16,868,000 over the next few years. The question is whether you want to ADD Carr's $7,500,000 salary to the 2014 cap or sign a replacement and transfer $7,434,000 of dead money, (scheduled to be accounted for in 2016 & 2017), into 2015. If Carr isn't worth something near his $7,500,000 salary this is a sensible move. Other moves can be made in 2015 to move the dead money backwards again if the space is needed.

1) If Carr is cut before June 1st he will count as $16,868,000 towards the 2014 cap.
2) If Carr is retained for the full season he will count as $12,217,000 towards the 2014 cap AND he will still account for $12,151,000 in future dead money.
3) If Carr is released after June 1st he will account for $4,717,000 towards the 2014 cap and $12,151,000 towards the 2015 cap.
4) If Carr signs a new deal he will account for $4,717,000 + his new 2014 salary towards the 2014 cap and $12,151,000 + any of his new salary that is accounted for after 2014, in future dead money.

Pick your poison. I'd choose 3) or 4).

Besides which JJ is playing a different game to everyone else so none of this matters. You don't need to concern yourself with Romo retiring because Romo isn't going to retire!

EVER!!!

Once he reaches the point when he can't contribute he'll leave but he'll be re-signed on a 1000 year contract. For cap purposes the dead money will count as next to nothing per year. I know what you're thinking. The Cowboys lose a roster spot! It's true! They will!...but JJ is trading it for $100M of cap space! He'll still have 46 players on the game-day roster but only 52 players on the 53-man roster. He's trading a special-teams roster spot for $100M of NFL starting talent. It's absolute fucking genius.

You can say that about Ware last year, but he's been as good as there's been in the game the last 20 years. Why do you hate that dude lol?

Besides the fact he is way over rated and paid. I don't hate he guy despite the fact he has nothing between the ears. He was set up to do well in the 3-4 in his prime. Now we are in a 4-3. Now that he has rapidly declined, he is now asked to go against bigger and stronger guys and remain healthy. We can do so much better for 12 million. I want what is best for the Cowboys, not Ware. He needs to go as soon as possible.

The Cowboys are expected to release Miles Austin as a post-June 1 cut.

The move would save $5.5 million versus the salary cap, but results in more than $5 million in 2015 dead money. Still, the Cowboys will need the room this year, and Austin isn't remotely worth his $5.5 million base salary. Austin's contract has proven to be one of Jerry Jones' biggest blunders, and that's saying something. The Cowboys should have gotten rid of this mess last year.

Actually the situation with Austin is better than it's portrayed. Austin has a dead money total of $7,855,600. The cap accounting schedule for it is $2,748,400 in 2014 and 2015 with $1,178,400 in 2016 and 2017. Releasing him before June 1st would bring forward the $5,105,200 from 2015, 2016, and 2017 into 2014, which wouldn't make any sense. Cutting him afterwards would keep the $2,748,400 in 2014 as it is and just bring the 2 lots of $1,178,400 forward from 2016 and 2017 to 2015 with the $2,748,400 that's already scheduled there. It will mean a cap hit of $5,105,200 in 2015 but more than half of it was already going to happen anyway.
I still expect the Cowboys to make Austin a reduced offer from his current $5.5M deal and I think Austin will accept it.

well those aren't my words but straight off the internet. Personally speaking. I firmly believe Austin has seen his last days with a star on his helmet.
