He was not good. Maybe he gets better, but there's a reason he lasted as long as he did, and it was a surprise when he went that high.

Well, not going up against Holiti Ngata twice a year has got to help, right?

I think he did about as expected for a rookie center. We'll see if he can improve from year 1 to year 2. He certainly wasn't as bad as some of the guys that have been trotted through the line over the past 2-3 years. But, like I said, we'll see how he improves....or rather, if he improves.

I remember reading somewhere that the coaches basically gameplan either Boling or Zeitler to help Bodine, and basically do his job for him.

It is weird how little this team values the center spot. Its been the weak link on some decent lines since Braham got hurt

To be fair, this team doesn't put much value and many things prudent to winning. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the center position isn't worth a hill of beans to MB and Marv. That said, id much rather have Bodine than Gutsuck and Kyle Cook.

I actually thought Bodine was pretty decent. I never heard about having to use the guard to do his job except to help out against really tough interior defensive lines. As you would probably expect from any rookie center that is not a top draft pick.

I dont think it's all that unusual to see OL helping out the rookie(s) along the line at all. Afterall, they are rookies. Even the top picks are going to need help now and again until they get acclimated. It's pretty rare that guys come in and just dominate at the LOL against guys who are basically grown ass men who have been playing at a higher level, lifting more, and more prepared than some 20-22 year old kid.

I agree with all of that. I can't remember where I read or heard that about Bodine. I'll see if i can find it. But if i remember correctly, it made it sound like all Bodine had to do was snap the ball and the guards would do the rest for him.

I think most of his grades were negative, but I'm not surprised about that.

However, I would assume that his negative grade is still a positive when compared to past players. I think he'll get better. The jury is out, that is for sure.

Drafted a rookie center last year, he played the entire season as the starter.

Drafted a rookie running back last year, didn't begin the season as a starter, but ended up one of the best RB in the league by the end of the season.

They do play once in a while.

I think this is an important point -- Hill was talented from the beginning, yet he didn't play as much until Gio got banged up. Yes, rookies have played when there haven't been any 'in-house' options (or Marvin's guys).

The only positions I can see a rookie playing this year are tight end (given Eifert's health this isn't a stretch) and linebacker (unlikely, but not crazy).

The Bengals front office has heard your request. We love the enthusiasm and interest and hope that you continue to spend lots of money.

YOUR REQUEST HAS BEEN FREAKING DENIED!

Here's the thing, though. If you draft a first rounder do you want them reaching for need or taking the best player there? If you can't fill a need spot with value, chances are you're going to draft at a position of depth. Yeah, that stinks when it comes time to seeing when these guys will play, but still fills an important role of having valuable depth for injuries.

They didn't need Dennard. They could have waited, or found a marginal F/A. He was the best player on the board, and while he didn't fill a true 'need' at the time, the depth provided is good. There are worst things than having a 1st rounder filling in for an injured player.

It would be nice if we could line up drafting a value player at a need position for once.

I think "value" is the most annoying draft related word/phrase

Agreed. This only became a thing when draft talk(bitching) became main stream. Which is to say, a player's "value"is based on his ranking on Mel Kiper's board, or Joe Blow from whogivesafuck.com's board. Just because they think a player has "value" doesn't me he's highly rated by NFL scouts nor is he even good.

I agree with everything you said. However, it's irritating when every year other teams seem to draft an impact player or immediate starter in the 1st round of the draft, yet the Bengals draft practice squaders.

The Bengals roster isn't that fucking good. We don't have to depth to be drafting 5th string DBs in the 1st. I don't care how good so and so is. The propoganda of who good the Bengals drafts have been is wearing thin. Other than AJ Green, we haven't had any other top picks contribute much of anything or even see the field. This team sucks in January because it's literally the same fucking team everytime. With the same holes and same lame overrated players who need to be replaced.

The only position I'd be okay with drafting for depth is OL. Otherwise I'd like to see a name that can make a difference. I know I know. Marvin is the coach. But still...

Also, I agree. I think you can find a player who might be slightly lower rated on your board, but still fills a much bigger 'need'. You might drop a few points in "value", or whatever, but when you get a guy that is 23rd or 27th...the drop off isn't that huge. I refuse to believe that the Bengals couldn't have found a LB, or another DT, with some of the depth picks they've had.
