Thanks for the info Pix. I actually feel much better today. My neck is still stiff and I have some soreness on my back a little bit, but overall the pain has gone down from a 7 or 8 to maybe a 3. I will take your advice into consideration. I have sort of chronic back/neck pain, it will be fine for a couple months and then out of nowhere it will pick up. I have a very physical job and I'm very tall, so this is probably going to be par for the course for me down the road. Are there any exercises that can help strengthen my back and prevent back pain? Or do I just need to not be such a dumbass and be careful how I lift stuff? Or am I fucked because I'm 6'5?

Watching how you lift is very important, and with chronic neck pain that's muscular it's often due to posture...which is hard to improve because, well, lets face it, we all have crap posture and it's been that way forever. Do you ever go to the gym? Or have some free weights handy? If so you can do some resistance training for your upper back that may help, but I wouldn't do it if the muscles are still flared up. Some lifts that could help would include shoulder shrugs, overhead pulls, a lot of the machines in the gym help too: Bodybuilding.com - Back Training: What Exercises Do You Need To Perform?
some examples there.
Also, a good thing if you get spasms again that helps a lot is an ice massage. If you have a dixie cup, fill it and freeze it overnight, then tear off the bottom and massage your neck with it (on a stretch is best). That's a GREAT treatment for it.
