I don't see many Preds fans on here. I could represent them just like I represent the only Duck fan on the boards.

As I am going to be an active follower and fan of the NHL this upcoming season I am looking for a team to follow. Also, I am going to purchase NHL '12 and play every single game of the season in a quest to win the Stanley Cup. As I haven't been much of a follower of hockey in the past just because I get focused on NFL and NBA I am trying to find a hockey team that I can become a fan of. Way back when I played NHL ESPN 2k5 I was the Edmonton Oilers, so im trying to pick between the Oilers, Penguins (as I am a Pirates fan, so mine as well stick within the city of Pitt) Buffalo and the Avalanche. I remember rooting for the Avs back in the late 90s. But that was probably because they were good. lol.

Just root for the Flyers.

Keep in mind the Penguins are the only team that have the commissioner and refs conspiring to help us win the Cup every year. Obviously, some years they are more successful than others. If we're really struggling in a specific game, they let us put six skaters on until other team starts to notice, but we're not penalized for it.

Also, go scout some toddler hockey games. If you happen to see that one kid is a ton better than the others and already on his way to become a phenom, you know that the Penguins scouting staff is already aware of this wunderkind and has made plans to tank the season prior to his draft year so that he can live in then 36-year old Sidney Crosby's basement in Sewickley while he adjusts to being the new star in town (this usually takes 1-4 years).

As a Penguins fan, you get to hear some hilarious jokes about your players from quick-witted fans of your rival teams. You would think hearing Sidney Crosby being called Cindy Crosby would stop being funny at some point, but like a fine wine, the joke just keeps getting better and better. Why, I even catch myself saying it sometimes! And then I laugh at my own cleverness.

Despite attendance having nothing to do with the team almost moving to Kansas City, every other fan of every other team in the NHL will reference the fact that "the Pens almost moved because their fans didn't show up" repeatedly as fact, even though they have been told this has nothing to do with it several hundred times. But having the same argument over and over again just makes me that much better at debate! If this is a skill you also value, I would say that is one of the many perks of being a Penguins fan.

The Penguins are also responsible for introducing several traditions to the sports world in general - they were the first team in the history of the NHL to have Whiteouts during the playoffs, have a large screen for fans to watch playoff games outside, to have a Stanley Cup parade, and to serve unsalted popcorn at their arena.

As for your other choices, Edmonton and Colorado are up-and-coming teams without a very rich history. No one really hates Buffalo because everyone is too busy feeling sorry for them. But as I think you can see, the choice is very clear. Go and buy a Sidney Crosby jersey and proudly tell everyone that you're a diehard Pens fan. I know you probably don't want to look like a bandwagoner, so you can fudge the details of your loyalty a bit and say you've been following the team since 2005.
