Jackets up 1-0. I am not sure if its because we are incapable of scoring in the first period or just don't want to, this pattern of no score in the first and allowing the opposition to score first or often in the first period continues with consistency. In the last 8 of 12 games, we have not scored in the first period. If we are to go anywhere as the season progresses including playoffs, this will have to change.
We have outlined a number of the dynamics involved in contributing factors, but sometimes, we just seemed mentally disconnected in the first which results in mental errors that lead to scores. We are getting good goal tending as Philly goal tending historically goes but it just appears that one or more players don't show up mentally until midway through the second period. I thought that was me, but now, I am not so sure.
Another consistent pattern is we continually throw the puck away and spend a great deal of the time in the first period in our end of the ice appearing to wait for the opposition to make a mistake by either losing the puck or just putting it out there to see what happens rather than aggressively taking the puck to the opponents net and then slowly the opponents down on the backcheck as they try to get the puck out of their zone.
