Flyers have signed 24 year old Kyle Flanagan
The Flyers have signed 24-year-old St. Lawrence University forward Kyle Flanagan to a one-year contract, effective for the 2013-14 season. Now that he has completed his senior year in collegiate hockey, he will join the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms for the rest of the current season on an ATO tryout deal.
Flanagan is an undersized but shifty and highly skilled player at the collegiate level. The captain of his collegiate team in his junior and senior campaigns, Flanagan is an excellent playmaking center who racked up 32 assists and 47 points in 32 games this year, and has averaged more than a point-per-game over the course his collegiate career (147 points in 134 games).
Flanagan centered St. Lawrence's high-scoring top line, flanked by junior wingers Greg Carey (28 goals) and Jeremy Wick (14 goals). Many have said Flanagan's play this season was worthy of Hobey Baker Award consideration.
At a bare minimum, Flanagan figures to inject some badly needed skill and creativity into the Phantoms' talent-starved roster. As a mature prospect who will turn 25 midway through next season, he is as ready for the pro game as he's going to be. His NHL upside (if any) should become clear sooner rather than later. The dream scenario is that he pans out in similar fashion to Matt Read, but the realistic expectations should be set lower.
The 5-foot-9 Flanagan does not have as explosive of a first stride as Read. However, his collection of other offensive skills are comparable, and he has an underrating finishing touch in addition to his passing ability. At the collegiate level, Flanagan evolved into a complete player who leads by example, which is why was named captain prior to his junior year. He looks small and weak physically but is surprisingly strong on his skates (although we'll have to see if that translates against some of those physical behemoths with mobility he's about to encounter in the pro ranks).
Flanagan's contract for next season is a one-way deal, meaning that he will make the same salary regardless of whether he cracks the Flyers' NHL roster or spends the 2013-14 season with the Phantoms. He would be waiver exempt next season only.
