The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will announce a contract extension for coach Pete Carroll on Friday, league sources confirmed Thursday night.

The team announced a news conference for 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday. No reason for the news conference was given.
Carroll was entering the final year of an original five-year, $35 million deal he signed to leave USC and become coach of the Seahawks in 2010. He led the franchise to its first Super Bowl championship in February.

Carroll said several times during the 2013 season that he was fine and had no concerns about his contract situation with the Seahawks.

There was speculation that Friday's news conference could be to announce a contract extension for free safety Earl Thomas. Those rumors were fueled by a Thursday night tweet from Thomas that said "GOD you're so good!!"
The Seahawks still hope to work out extensions for Thomas and cornerback Richard Sherman. Both players are set to become free agents after the 2014 season.

News of Carroll's extension was earlier reported by the NFL Network.

The extension runs through the 2016 season. Carroll's original five-year deal, signed with the team in January 2010, was set to expire after next season.

"This was a huge priority for us coming into the offseason," general manager John Schneider said. "We knew it was around the corner, and quite honestly we're trying to take care of our own people and keep our young players together. But where do you start? You start at the top."

I was one of them, but why shouldn't I have felt that way? He never proved he could until now.
