This defense is confused and scared to make a mistake that is the worse combo ever
You can be slow but fundamentally smart and still make plays but scared n confused that equals disaster
-------
Blckflag--I think you hit it. Especially with the too scared to make mistakes. That explains even alot of the poor tackling/missed tackles. Bo may have put on his 'humble" face for the public last week but IMO in practices and behind closed doors he's still the old hot-headed prick.

Being able to tackle period. Baby steps--if they do gain 10 yards it'd still be nice to see the tackle away from the shoulders.

I agree they aren't buying into the scheme they expected to use, I just don't see Bo making drastic changes.....he's too damn stubborn. After three years (actually more), you really thinks he'll do anything but minor "tweaks"?

I just replied to your original statement that it was a bad idea because the players might "lose faith" and "panic.
It's my opinion they've been doing that for 3 years now.

"Do I really think he'll do anything but minor tweaks?".

No. My answer in the poll should have told you that. I'm curious if anyone else thinks there are going to be any meaningful changes. IMO Bo's saying the same things he's said after every shitty defensive performance for years. He's just not being such an asshole about it.

I thought it was interesting in his post-game presser how he stopped all of a sudden saying "this all starts with me."

Now he is saying "this all starts with the coaches on this staff."

1 or 2 gap 3-4/4-3, hybrid mix, it doesn't matter, our dlinemen aren't doing a single thing pertaining to their jobs, they're utterly deystroying the entire defense. They have to pull their head out of their asses and do something, anything, besides just standing there holdings hands with some other dude

we haven't even seen our base defense up to this point. I don't think they do that, if they do, we might as well start looking for a new HC now. I think they will run their same basic packages but give the DL less responsibility.

Seriously this defense is confused and scared to fuck up

With freshman and young guys Id tell em this:
Look your gonna fuck up you will make a lot of mistake all i ask is whatever decision you do you do it at 150mph and fuck somebody up

When I watch the defense they are so scared to make a mistake that they rather let the offense throw the first punch and hope they can tackle them or not allow a big play.

Fuck that attack but nope DL plays patty cake
Lb are so scared bc they are on a island and if they miss the tackle everyone see it
Secondary has their back turn and arid gusting wr for 10 plus second bc there if is DL rush and cooper is leading in tackles....

Imma be honest if things don't improve and that on offense too this team will see 4-5 losses before bowl season defense best games were against a fcs team n a winless team

This will be the first time I'll be happy with a 9-4 season bc I don't see how we will reach it

I dont want to over simplify this, but imo if we run a dam 4-3 D and blitz early and often opponents will be forced to abandon the friggin spread ( which is what i think kills us ) and go back to their normal offenses.

Bo s D hasnt been able to defend the spread since he got here and every opposing coach knows it. Thats why we faaceit every dam week. BLITZ BLITZ BLITZ

My last coaching stint was with a guy who swore by the 2-gap. We had the best athletes in the state, but he insisted on that lame ass defense. He ran that all year on the varsity. When I took kids to the JV games we scrapped it and went with a modified 1-gap. We absolutely tore people up. Late in the year a majority of my JV kids were called up. with many taking over as starters. They played my style of defense and amassed more sacks, tackles for loss and turnovers in their first game up than his weak scheme had produced in the previous 7 games combined.

The following season he stuck with his crap defense and I resigned.

2 gap defense is as popular as the wishbone in college football

Seriously I know OL have to be laughing when they hear we run this.

Now if we had suh like player then yeah it would work but suh don't grow on trees and don't wanna play up north above the Dixie line

We've been playing allot of 1 gap as well, but nothing is working, they fail horribly on the sideline calls first off then it's compounded by the wrong pre snap reads. On the play where Zinger or whatever scored right up the gut for 40yds both our LB's cleared out to cover WR's, leaving us with no one in the middle, they hand off and what do you know our Line fails to get off their blocks. Wrong defensive set to begin with.
Ankrah and Randle should never be starting, They tell us that the guys who practice the best earn playing time, well we must be having some wonderful practices if these guys got first dibs

LOL, that didn't last long. Pelini back to throwing the kids under the bus. (at least he answered the poll)

This dude is not gonna change a damn thing. He's damned determined to pound his system (whatever it is) into these kid's heads.

From the Big 10 Teleconference today.

Sam Mckeown (OWH): "Hey Bo, you were pretty frank on Saturday, as was your defensive coordinator John Papuchis about figuring out what this defense can do, especially as pertains to stopping the run. Can you talk a little about the choices that are in front of you, in terms of scheme, in terms of like a one gap vs a two gap, or blitzing or not blitzing, or how you guys can kinda unleash this front seven's effort. What are some of the things you examine in this bye week as you look at the way you're stopping the run?"

Pelini: "Well we're examining everything, but I always say Sam it's not what you do it's how you're doing it and we've struggled as much when we've flooded the box with people as we have when we haven't, and it's not always a physical thing, I think we can get better fundamentally obviously you can always get better fundamentally, but the concerning thing to me was the amount of missed assignments that we had and just lack of execution and doing your job that was unacceptable last week, it was glaring. We had a ton of, ton of missed assignments, and that goes beyond the, you know that's not even taking into account in certain respects the technique errors we had, but umm we need to clean ourselves up, and we talked at length about it and I think our plan going forward is you take the approach as a coach that it is what it is, you have to get it fixed. There's a responsibility on that that goes both ways and I think our guys understand that, and I think our players were embarrassed by how they played and some of the things we approached the film in a black and white manner you know this is what it is and this is what we need to get fixed going forward and it's well within our grasp. "

Sam McKeweon: "I know you've taken some criticism at times for sticking at times to the two gap scheme. Is that something that you feel like that criticism is misguided because you've done more one gap than people realize or do you feel like there's something that you want to look at schematically that may help your players create more chaos in the middle and help stop the run?"

Pelini: "Well, I mean you know, you know I think it's number one people you know, they they'll, the notion of what we do two gap wise is a, is a fallacy I mean to a certain extent tah, I mean uh and how we play. I mean they um you know it's it's not, we don't have guys sitting there saying hey you got two gaps I mean that's never been, that's not our philosophy, it never has been and um you know and (chuckle) tha that's just a little bit of a misnomer. umm, you know it's play, you're really playing eh eh you're playing a gap in more of a heavy scheme is is when we, when we do play a two gaps in a two gap situation, but you still have responsibility of playing a one gap you're just playing heavier um so th that always been a little bit of a misnomer, but we we've gone to, especially this year we've probably called more one gap than we have in our whole a you know since I've been here and, and ahh , but you know you you sometimes that can become a little bit more glaring in stopping the run when you have one guy that's out of his gap you know you can get hurt a little bit more um at the end of the day it's number one first and foremost understanding, it's being able to adjust, it's being able to execute your job and you know once again that goes back to coaching, we gotta coach it better."

I'm beginning to believe that Pelini doesn't even know what he wants to do defensively anymore. No wonder the players are so fucking confused. How the hell does he recruit?

It's X's and O's. It's always been more about X's and O's with Pelini (other than Suh).

The fact is these guys can't teach whatever it is they're trying to teach. They can't communicate.

Judging by the last 6 games, I'm very concerned for the rest of this season. It's business as usual in Lincoln.

In 72 career games under Bo Pelini, the Huskers have fumbled the ball 175 times. Nebraska currently ranks 120th nationally with 11 total fumbles in 2013.

Nebraska currently has one interception for every 15 pass attempts it has faced this season. That ranks fourth nationally.

The Huskers defense has given up more plays of 10-plus yards (79) than any team in the country other than New Mexico State (87). New Mexico State is an INDEPENDENT and has played Texas, Minnesota, and UCLA.
