Yes it’s a bad pick for sure but it didn’t mean Payne was on the way out as portrayed . The Mathis pick was a bad pick

I don’t know what revisionist history is being referred to but I have said all along and I have budget posts showing how we could keep our d/ line intact for over 2 yrs now.

so for the record I criticized the Dotson pick , feeling he could have been picked later , the Mathis pick because it didn’t address a need , the Robinson pick because he could have been had later. Those were my reasonings at the time

Hopefully, Mathis turns out to be a fine player, but looking back, it was obvious that we should have used the pick on an actually starting need instead of re-enforcing depth with our strongest unit on the field.

We basically have four 1st round picks starting on DLine, and a 2nd rounder as a backup. We have 90 million guaranteed to the starting DTs. THis is not the worst thing in the world.

Meanwhile, we will most likely start Howell or TH if we bring him back as Keim has suggested, with the same OLine with a few bargain bend signees. We still don't know if CB or OLine will be the 1st round pick. Bottom line is we do not have the proper cap to properly address the OLine at this time, even though we had the 25th-ranked offense and the 3rd-ranked defense.

The most successful teams have talent all over the field and not solely invested in a few units. That philosophy is what separates the Commanders from let's say the Chiefs for example. The Chiefs have talent on the OLine, WR, DL, LB, Secondary, and RB units. Rivera has decided to heavily invest in DLine and WR. I disagree with that approach as it exposes other units on the field that eventually torpedo the team. We all complained about TH and Wentz running for their lives last year, but now, we have about 24 million to address that major problem along with finding a starter at CB and LB.

In other words, yes, the 2022 2nd rounder should and could have been used to address one of those major starting needs. I am pulling for Mathis, but I didn't like the pick from the perspective of position. I understand I am in the minority here and could not care less if I get "likes" for my comments.

If we use the same logic for 2023, let's take a DE with our 2nd rounder because we don't know if Sweat will resign or not. Does that move make sense?

I completely disagree that we don’t have the money to properly address the OL. I have already shown how to do it.


As for the draft, it absolutely makes sense to take a DE in round 2 if that is the best player and value available to us.

Sweat has best year was 9 sacks, Young's best year was 7.5. Need more production from a DE than that.

DEs are becoming the least desired of these positions. Pressure from the middle of the line is now more important than from DEs. Change happens and as offensive football is further enhanced, creating QB discomfort (stepping up in the pocket) makes DT's value increase.

Because Sweat, Young (when healthy), and Toohill to a lesser degree, do tend to keep QB honest and not give up the edge all that often, it makes Allen, and Payne's jobs that much easier. Because neither are being consistently double and triple teamed, and when they are, the DEs are keeping these QBs honest by not giving them the edge to slip around and either run or pass for stupid yards.
