Yes it’s a bad pick for sure but it didn’t mean Payne was on the way out as portrayed . The Mathis pick was a bad pick

I don’t know what revisionist history is being referred to but I have said all along and I have budget posts showing how we could keep our d/ line intact for over 2 yrs now.

so for the record I criticized the Dotson pick , feeling he could have been picked later , the Mathis pick because it didn’t address a need , the Robinson pick because he could have been had later. Those were my reasonings at the time

and you can go back and search engine any damn thing you like

no worries. I thought at the time the MAthis pick was the replacement for Payne. He had a huge year and Wentz didnt work out. So we didn't have to pay alot at the QB position

The point is that the 2nd round pick should have been used to address a starting need....not a depth need.

Hopefully, Mathis turns out to be a fine player, but looking back, it was obvious that we should have used the pick on an actually starting need instead of re-enforcing depth with our strongest unit on the field.

We basically have four 1st round picks starting on DLine, and a 2nd rounder as a backup. We have 90 million guaranteed to the starting DTs. THis is not the worst thing in the world.

Meanwhile, we will most likely start Howell or TH if we bring him back as Keim has suggested, with the same OLine with a few bargain bend signees. We still don't know if CB or OLine will be the 1st round pick. Bottom line is we do not have the proper cap to properly address the OLine at this time, even though we had the 25th-ranked offense and the 3rd-ranked defense.

The most successful teams have talent all over the field and not solely invested in a few units. That philosophy is what separates the Commanders from let's say the Chiefs for example. The Chiefs have talent on the OLine, WR, DL, LB, Secondary, and RB units. Rivera has decided to heavily invest in DLine and WR. I disagree with that approach as it exposes other units on the field that eventually torpedo the team. We all complained about TH and Wentz running for their lives last year, but now, we have about 24 million to address that major problem along with finding a starter at CB and LB.

In other words, yes, the 2022 2nd rounder should and could have been used to address one of those major starting needs. I am pulling for Mathis, but I didn't like the pick from the perspective of position. I understand I am in the minority here and could not care less if I get "likes" for my comments.

If we use the same logic for 2023, let's take a DE with our 2nd rounder because we don't know if Sweat will resign or not. Does that move make sense?

i agree with you. I thought we would be fielding trade offers for Payne. I hope he and Mathis works out.

For being pick in the 2nd round JDR must have a plan for this guy. We didnt get to see him last year b/c of the injury.

I completely disagree that we don’t have the money to properly address the OL. I have already shown how to do it.

As for the draft, it absolutely makes sense to take a DE in round 2 if that is the best player and value available to us.

The Skins now have 2 of the 6 highest paid DTs in the NFL. Payne @ # 2 and Allen @ # 6.

I don't know how in the fubar they calculate this, but according to sportrac. Chase Young's market value is 18.2 million dollars while Montez Sweat has a market value of 16.6 million.

If Chase Young doesn't do anything this upcoming season he won't be worth that

Let's see if he can get 10 and then we can debate.

Sweat has best year was 9 sacks, Young's best year was 7.5. Need more production from a DE than that.
I'd like to see more personally, especially if you're getting 19 sacks from 2 of your interior linemen.

At that same time though. If he has say 10-12 sacks he'll likely be able to command as much as Payne is making. If he has 13-15 sacks, more than Payne.

If he has that many sacks very good chance the defense is killing it

Clowney has to stay healthy and produce , before he was hurt he hadn’t .

I saw Curl's tweet that he posted about ranking top ten among safeties in every category every year he's been in the league. It an't no bullshit and he rightfully is gonna want to be paid like one. He has a lot of evidence saying he deserves it including best defender under 25 years of age status. And the most impressive aspect about Curl's game has been his consistency. I wouldn't be shocked if he was looking to move into the top 5 of best paid safeties.

  • 1. Chargers safety Derwin James: $19 million
  • 2. Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick: $18.2 million
  • 3. Seahawks safety Jamal Adams: $17.5 million
  • 4. Vikings safety Harrison Smith: $16 million
  • 5. Broncos safety Justin Simmons: $15.25 million
  • 6. Cardinals safety Budda Baker: $14.75 million
  • 7. Bears safety Eddie Jackson: $14.6 million
  • 8. Titans safety Kevin Byard: $14.1 million
  • 9. Ravens safety Marcus Williams: $14 million
  • 10. Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs: $13 million

The NFL is full of young, talented defensive players, but according to Pro Football Focus, the best plays for the Washington Commanders.
Kamren Curl, who has a 91.0 overall grade from PFF three years into his career, was recently named by the analytics website as the highest graded 25 years old or younger in the NFL. Curl, 23, beat out Maxx Crosby (90.6), Micah Parsons (90.5), Jack Jones (90.4) and Jeffery Simmons (90.0) to claim the top spot.

Take it a step further, the defense is completely different with and without Curl. Any time he is on the field, the defense gets much better.

Curl got a first team all pro vote from somebody. They need to take care of him.

DEs are becoming the least desired of these positions. Pressure from the middle of the line is now more important than from DEs. Change happens and as offensive football is further enhanced, creating QB discomfort (stepping up in the pocket) makes DT's value increase.

Going to slightly disagree.

Having DEs that must be accounted for helps out DTs alot. Because Sweat, Young (when healthy), and Toohill to a lesser degree, do tend to keep QB honest and not give up the edge all that often, it makes Allen, and Payne's jobs that much easier. Because neither are being consistently double and triple teamed, and when they are, the DEs are keeping these QBs honest by not giving them the edge to slip around and either run or pass for stupid yards.

Clowney and sweat need to stop talking and start producing . Neither has had a double digit sack yr and clowney was dicking up the place before he wrecked his knee . The last 3 games this yr he was peg legging it
