Former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner has signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent -- to play wide receiver, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. If it sounds familiar, it should; Julian Edelman, who happens to have the same agent as Gardner, arrived in Foxborough in 2009 as an undrafted free agent who played quarterback in college.
But the similarities end their; while Edelman is 5-10 and 200 lbs., Gardner is 6-4 and 218 lbs. Size differences aside, Gardner ran a 4.65 40 at his pro day in March, and he does have some experience at wideout; he started four games there at Michigan and had another 27 starts at quarterback.
At one time, Gardner was considered a possible NFL quarterback prospect. In 2013, he set school records for passing yards in a game (503) and total yards in a game (584), and he ranks sixth on Michigan's career passing touchdown list (44). As a junior, Gardner threw for 2,960 yards with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, but he struggled as a senior, tossing 10 touchdowns against 15 picks. As a wide receiver, Gardner has 16 receptions for 266 yards and four scores.
He also follows in the footsteps of former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, who was drafted by the Jaguars in 2013 to play running back and wide receiver.
