Have you actually read the lawsuit though? That situation was a little different than what the public has been lead to believe. McDonalds for some reason had their coffee machine's turned way up temperature wise beyond what is ever recommended. If spilled on a person at the temp they kept it at when this happened it could easily cause 3rd degree burns.

Also at the time over 700 people had been hurt by McDonalds coffee because of it being so excessively hot. Actually they had quite a few lawsuits over this issue and had known for over 10 years that their coffee was at an unsafe heat level yet chose not to change their policy.

Stella? She got $26M for sticking a cup ot coffee between her legs and squeezed the cup hitting the brakes driving out of McDonld's. Appeal took 4 years and then Appeals Court reduced the award to $6M. They did that for not printing a warning on the cup and she had given away almost the entire amount to her family. It was the attorney's who were pissed, their share was reduced to 12% from 33%. After 6 years of work they got to keep $800,000 from their original $8M.
