Three OffesnsivePlayers Visit With Patriots

Iowa tight end Noah Fant
The Patriots also met with the 6’5, 250 pound Fant at the NFL Combine, so they’re definitely showing real interest in the uber athlete. Fant is considered a receiving tight end and not a great in-line blocker, so his role with the Patriots would be different from Rob Gronkowski’s old job.

Still, Fant is an incredible talent that could still be on the board late in the first round. He’s one of the top three tight ends, alongside teammate T.J. Hockenson (expected to go in the top 15) and Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. (expected to go in the top 40).

Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown
The Patriots met with the 6’1, 225 pound Brown at his Pro Day, so there’s real interest there, too. Brown has been overshadowed by teammate D.K. Metcalf, who torched the combine, but Brown is still a good athlete with 4.49s 40 yard speed and a 10-foot broad jump.

And, more importantly, Brown is a good route runner and has led the SEC in receiving yards in each of the past two seasons, gaining 1,252 yards in 2017 and 1,320 in 2018, while also ranking second in receptions each year. He also led the conference in receiving touchdowns in 2017. For comparison, Metcalf only recorded 569 receiving yards.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick loves a player that thrives in the SEC and there’s been no better receiver than Brown, who is projected to be a first round pick. Dating back to 2001, no SEC receiver has averaged more yards per game than Brown (112 YPG) over a two-season window.

The players behind Brown on the list are Jordan Matthews (2012-13, 108 YPG), Amari Cooper (2013-14, 99 YPG), Mike Evans (2012-13, 96 YPG), Sidney Rice (2005-06, 93 YPG), Jordan Matthews (2011-12, 91 YPG), and Alshon Jeffery (2009-10, 91 YPG). That’s a pretty strong list to be associated with.

South Carolina wide receiver Deebo Samuel
The Patriots also met with the 5’11, 215 pound Samuel at the NFL Combine. Samuel is a do-it-all player that can catch the ball at every level of the field, run the ball out of the backfield, and return kicks. He’s a tough player that could flourish in the New England offense, especially playing in the slot with impressive yards-after-the-catch ability.

On the other hand, Samuel has always battled injuries, with 2018 being his first full season. Samuel is expected to go in the second round, so is he worth the injury risk?

Bill decided to give the media something to 'think' about.

He said that the Patriots would not be moving up around the #8 or #10 spot in t5he draft. He will be drafting players that he feels will improve the team or at least fill a role on the team. He em that they could all do as many mock drafts as they want but don't put his name on them or near them. Then he actually laughed and took questions from local Boston media for 20 minutes. Notice they said that it was local media, no outta statahs.

FOSTER MOREAU, LSU, 6-4, 253 POUNDS
Moreau is a potential multi-purpose tight end who didn't have too many opportunities to prove it playing out of a run-heavy offense during his collegiate career. But he impressed at the Senior Bowl, being named the top tight end in practices, and produced through the air when given the chance with the Tigers (10.1 yards per target, one drop on 27 targets last year, per PFF).

Athletically, Moreau's tests suggest he checks every box for the Patriots (4.66-second 40, 36.5-inch vertical, 7.16 three-cone, 4.11 short shuttle, 121-inch broad jump). His athleticism compares favorably to a Patriots first-rounder from early in Belichick's tenure. Back in 2002, Daniel Graham checked in at 6-3, 248 pounds with a 4.64 40, a 36-inch vert and a 118-inch broad jump. Moreau also lands relatively highly here because he wore the No. 18 at LSU, which is annually presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership and selflessness.

KAHALE WARRING, SAN DIEGO STATE, 6-5, 252 POUNDS
Warring is relatively raw in how he handles himself as an in-line player (he picked up football late in his high school career), but his athleticism jumps off the tape . . . and it jumps off the page if you simply line up his combine measurables. He more than meets Patriots typical thresholds here with his size, his hands (9.75 inches), his speed (4.67 40) and his explosiveness (36.5-inch vert).

Though unrefined as a blocker, there seems to be potential there for him to serve in an all-purpose role. It may take some time, but if he's available in the third round, the Patriots may be willing to wait as they bide their time with Seferian-Jenkins for a season. Warring -- who played a variety of sports through high school, including basketball, water polo and cross country -- has athleticism that is hard to come by.

TREVON WESCO, WEST VIRGINIA, 6-3, 267 POUNDS
Another future blocking specialist at the next level, Wesco actually checks in closer to former Patriots blocking specialist Dwayne Allen size-wise. Wesco was heavier at the combine than Allen (6-3, 255) was at his in 2012. Yet Wesco still tested similarly to the former Clemson standout.

They had identical 40s (4.89 seconds) and short shuttles (4.37 seconds), as well as near-identical three-cone times (7.12 for Allen, 7.18 for Wesco) and verticals (32 inches for Allen, 31 for Wesco). If the Patriots are going to maintain their beat-you-up at the line style of offense, and if they have any concerns about Izzo after he missed his rookie season, Wesco could be drafted on Day 3 and still play a key role.

J.J. ARCEGA-WHITESIDE

I'll take him in the 3rd round.....
Wow this kid is a tough one to gauge where he might go in the draft.
I've seen everything from the first to the third.
Great athletic qualities but could suffer getting open against press coverage corners.
I like him in the third no sooner. As I've said would be great to get TB a tall WR that can box out and take advantage of that in the EZ.

This is the guy I'd like to see the Patriots take......

Potential Patriots QBs: Is Tyree Jackson Draft’s Most Overlooked Player?

He's young and coachable and no one knows who the hell he is.......
Well no way I take him before round 5. He IMO an Etling type pick, if he is there late sure but round 5 would be my target for him. Windows are small in the NFL you just can't muscle balls in there and I am unsure his skill sets fit the Pats scheme. Round 5 work in project sure, why not?

Or Perhaps the Pats take a TE in 1 then a DT, WR shuffle some pics and take him later. But there are other TEs I like more
Knowing the Patriots, with the big names on the board at tight end, they will select some obscure rugby player from New Zealand.

Well if he is a Rugby player from New Zealand chances are he won't be obscure.

Here's a couple of mocks.......

Seven-round mock drafts
R.J. White:

Round Overall Player Notes
1 32 WR A.J. Brown, Ole Miss
2 56 TE Irv Smith Jr., Alabama from CHI
2 64 CB Joejuan Williams, Vanderbilt
3 73 WR Andy Isabella, UMass from DET
3 97 to Tampa Bay
3 101 DT Kingsley Keke, Texas A&M
4 107 ILB Blake Cashman, Minnesota from TB*
4 134 to San Francisco
5 147 S Sheldrick Redwine, Miami from TB/BUF*
6 191 RB Trayveon Williams, Texas A&M from BAL*
6 205 to Baltimore
7 239 QB Gardner Minshew II, Washington State from PHI
7 243 LB Jamal Davis II, Akron from KC
7 246 to Baltimore
7 252 to San Francisco

DE Arik Armstead (from San Francisco)
This draft should be about adding weapons to the passing game after losing Rob Gronkowski and multiple receivers this offseason, and that starts at No. 32 with A.J. Brown, a great route-runner with excellent size who can share the load with Julian Edelman as a primary passing option with Gronkowski out the door. Before Day 2 kicks off, the Patriots work out another deal with their trade buddies in San Francisco to land Arik Armstead for fourth- and seventh-round picks after the 49ers land Nick Bosa at No. 2. Considering all the picks New England has, it's a fine price to pay for a talented young player on his fifth-year option.

Once Day 2 starts, the Patriots scoop up a receiving tight end in Smith who didn't test well but can work the seam and stretch the field, and Tom Brady will know how to get the most out of him. After adding a big, proven corner at the end of the second round, the Patriots snag another receiving weapon in Round 3 with Isabella, who ran a 4.31 40 and knows how to get open. With Edelman, Brown, Isabella and Smith, the Patriots won't be lacking for options in the passing game. After trading out of Day 2 with their second pick of Round 3, the team snags a versatile defensive lineman whose best fit should be as a penetrator on the interior.

The first pick they landed after trading down with the Bucs nets the Patriots a linebacker prospect who had an outstanding combine and can contribute immediately on special teams while eventually emerging with a role on the defense. The second pick from that trade is used on a versatile safety who should be able to take over as a starter down the road. The Pats then make a small move up in the sixth to land Williams, who shined as an all-around back at Texas A&M and would be a steal this late in a class saturated with Round 3-6 caliber running backs. The Patriots then spend their remaining picks on a developmental quarterback and a potential special-teams ace who might not have a clear position on defense.

I was going to create a mock but just don't have the time so I'll toss my two cents in and see where it goes. Based on the amount of TEs on the current roster 5 or 6 I think the Pats sit on this position. Things I think we see early.

Round 1: Best DT on board the Pats have not had real pressure up the middle since Vince left and I think they need to get that back.

Round 2: Best DE and Best WR Available hopefully they take a look at Hakeem Butler.

Round 3: Best Safety, Best QB, Best TE

Round 4: Best ILB

Round 7: Best LB, Best CB, K
