Hockey parents sue youth league for $25K after sons are cut - Puck Daddy - NHL - Yahoo! Sports

Vito Valela and David Longo are both suing on behalf of their sons, Christopher and Daniel respectively. Besides the GTHL, Avalanche Minor Sports president Anthony Iantorno as well as team officials Doriano Pistarelli, Andy Vandenberk, Felice Guglielmi and Peter Posca are named as defendants in the action.

"Their direct actions have caused irreparable psychological damage to Daniel Longo's self esteem as an impressionable teenager and demoralized Daniel as an athlete and team hockey player with his peers," the Longo statement of claim reads. "The conduct by all defendants destroyed the dignity of my son, whom in good conscience gave his team nothing but his best efforts."

Valela's statement of claim states: "When Christopher was advised of his termination by my wife and I, he vowed never to play the game he loved since childhood. And, morevoer, his misguided group of defendants demoralized my wife and I, whom had gone well beyond the call of duty as parents in support of the Toronto Avalanche hockey team for two seasons."
What a joke. If they think his dignity is destroyed now, just wait until all the other kids tease their child incessantly over the lawsuit.

To bad some parents over react to stupid shit. The few times I was ever cut only made me work harder and thats the direction those parents should have pushed that kid!

Yeah what a psychological mess these kids will be. Thanks Mom & Dad!:D

lawsuits in this country are out of control.. you can apparently sue people for cutting kids from sports teams, burning yourself on hot coffee (mcdonalds lost this suit, and would've gotten complaints if they had cold coffee), failing to accomplish a surgery that has a 20% success rate.. its ridiculous

medical malpractice is the worst.. if they're doing surgery on your knee and cut your spleen or you get staph infection, its one thing.. but having a patient go the other way on something like open heart surgery, come on..

I should sue McDonald's for my coffee not being hot enough.

This lawsuit is a disgrace. Anyone who files bullshit lawsuits like this is a disgrace. People are so fucking lazy they'll stoop to doing this shit to try and become a completely undeserving millionaire (not in this case but usually). It's disgusting. I hope the judge that hears this just laughs and tells them to get the fuck out of his/her courtroom.

I would have expected this lawsuit in the USA, not Canada.
In the US, this might have went under the radar for the kids but since it is Canada and it is suing the Greater Toronto Hockey League (which I think I have heard is an excellent development league), those kids will get harassed for a long time.

I think someone should actually beat on the attorney that told them they actually had a shot at winning this absurd lawsuit

The good thing about here in the U.S. is a lot of states have frivolous lawsuit statutes that prohibit some of these stupider lawsuits, They will let you file but if you lose you lose a lot. one you have to pay all the court costs, you also end up paying the attorney fees for the other side to. There is other stuff written in there, but I would make damn sure I had a legit case before I filed under these penalties!

What a joke! If the kids can't handle being cut then they shouldn't have been involved in competitive sports in the first place! When I first read the headline I assumed that they weren't actually suing because he was cut but because perhaps the cutting process was handled poorly, but it says it was his own mother that broke the news to him.

Whether its in the US or in Canada I hope that some of these people who are responsible for these frivolous lawsuits one day get a taste of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf". I hope that someday 1 of these people has a legitimate claim in which they don't get the benefit of the doubt because of 1 or more previous B.S. lawsuits. Unfortunately its unlikely to ever happen but I can still hope.

I didn't make the local Bantam team when I was fourteen. I was the smallest kid around and I knew, player wise, I wasn't talented enough. I didn't sit around and sulk. My psyche didn't suffer. I loved the game so much, I took up officiating. Now, I was on the ice for the whole game, not just 1-2 minute shifts and I got paid for it. After officiating for thirty-five years at every level of the game, the hockey community in my Province honored me by inducting me into their Hockey Hall of Fame. I wish people would look beyond their noses and stop feeling sorry for themselves. Take a negative and turn it into a positive.
