It's cuts across a variety of genres like Edisto said but it's roots are here in the Texas/Oklahoma region. Nashville is a machine now and isn't as conducive to song writing as people want to believe. Austin is kind of the center but even that place is starting to show signs of bending a little to the commercial side. Depends on what an artist wants to do. Pat Green rode the circuit for awhile, then became a commercial hit and a doochebag to boot.

It's just a more authentic approach to music. Problem is authentic generally doesn't get much radio play.

Thnx for the detailed explanation. Very intriguing, gonna check it out. Been to Nashville twice and dug the music scene I checked out while there. Lotta talented people living in that area of the country.

unfortunately for the most part talent alone doesn't do it anymore if you don't fit a certain niche or look quite right. same thing here in NOLA, so much talent and so few ever really get heard the way they should. people in the industry (writers, singers, players) know of them but unless you're willing to tour 300 nights a year....it's tough to survive.

how else do you explain someone like Johnny Sansone or Tab Benoit or Anders Osborne having such hardcore fans yet general public just goes "huh?"

I think Sansone is just as good as Charlie Musselwhite yet most people don't get it
