i think the letter of the law is a straight red is shown for an intentional handball that prohibits a scoring opportunity so it could even be shown if its outside the 18 and a defender handles a ball that will obviously lead to a scoring opportunity
Yeah, you are right. I just looked it up and it said "obvious" scoring opportunity. Not sure what that means since when you are inside the 18', you generally have a scoring opportunity. So i don't know if that means you'd get the red if you blocked a cross, or if they are mostly trying to prevent a field player from playing goalie to prevent a sure goal.
I doubt it comes up very often. They should stick a label on the 18' that says "Caution: Be on Your Best Behavior!*" *Except corner kicks, feel free to grab shirts, elbow, punch people in the nuts, and generally foul the shit out of people on those.
