i think the letter of the law is a straight red is shown for an intentional handball that prohibits a scoring opportunity so it could even be shown if its outside the 18 and a defender handles a ball that will obviously lead to a scoring opportunity

Yeah, you are right. I just looked it up and it said "obvious" scoring opportunity. Not sure what that means since when you are inside the 18', you generally have a scoring opportunity. So i don't know if that means you'd get the red if you blocked a cross, or if they are mostly trying to prevent a field player from playing goalie to prevent a sure goal.

I doubt it comes up very often. They should stick a label on the 18' that says "Caution: Be on Your Best Behavior!*" *Except corner kicks, feel free to grab shirts, elbow, punch people in the nuts, and generally foul the shit out of people on those.

As a defender I do enjoy corner kicks as I can knock people down with impunity. Nothing like a shoulder to the chest as they are about to jump. :-)

That poster is hilarious.

I don't understand why Kim Jong-Il isn't on the team. If his soccer skills are anything like his golf skills, surely North Korea beats Brazil 11-0 with 8 goals and 2 assists from Jong-Il himself, who has a hat trick in bicycle kick goals alone.

I'm not impressed with that diving pussbag (#9 or #7, I forget which) on Uruguay.
The number of "injuries" he's sustained today, he may never walk, eat, see or even move again.
poor guy.

That whole sequence was just tragic for South Africa. What a shame.

yea he came out to challange and tried to take away the angle, and the Uruguain player tried to get the ball past him then shoot. and when he made his move the goalie just hit his foot insted and a PK and red card were awarded/given

I thought it should have just been a yellow. His motion was to make the save initially, and the forward made a little deke. On top of that, I don't know if it was a "clear" goal-scoring chance. The ball was rolling back to the D-man on South Africa. I'd certainly be hesitant to knock the starting goalie out of (essentially) the rest of the tournament for the host nation.

yes. #9 came in (a missed offside, mind you) across the 6 yard line chasing a ball, and Khune sprawled out to block it, but got a piece of the dude's toe. 9 rolled over, screamed in agony, and miraculously dug the sniper's bullet out of himself with is bare hands, and popped back up again.
Forlan (or was it Lillian Vanderzalm) buried a beauty upstairs. The new goalie had guessed right but had no chance.

I think a SA player then put a curse on the referee.

Actually, it wasn't. When the ball was kicked, he was on. The ball was just delayed because it deflected off the defender. I paused the replay - there was no offsides.

Ugh, the diving. Worst part of soccer, especially at the pro/int'l level. I love soccer,, but the diving and antics afterward are ridiculous. Guys writhing in pain b/c they got kicked in a shin pad like someone had just cut off their foot.

Man up, boys.
