Going down to the wire for Spain now...

No team has ever won the World Cup after losing the opening match.

lol. nice avatar, Mooger.

I have enjoyed the fact that (almost) every game could basically go either way.
I don't want to jinx Switz with 5 min left, but look at NKorea keeping within a goal Brazil, for example.
The last group games should be interesting for drama - even in terms of goals scored to move on or not.

the games themselves have been somewhat dry though. Portugal yesterday was an example. nil-nil against Ivory Coast, and they were still patiently playing keep-away at midfield with about 3 minutes left.

Biggest story line so far is how underwhelming some of the top teams have been.
Brasil, Britain, France, Spain, have all been someone 'meh' in their first games.

And that ends a 37-match undefeated streak against European competition. Wow.

LOL. Alexi Lalas - "Switzerland just caught a big nut"

Gotta be a better way to say that.

stepped away from the computer ... was it deliberate? Di Natale of Italy stuck his elbow out at a ball that was going past him in the first game and should have been carded but wasnt

i think the stat I heard was that 8 percent of teams that have lost their opening games have made it into the quarters

Is it? I would think the PK would be enough to discourage anyone from doing it. I wasn't aware that was the rule.

i think the letter of the law is a straight red is shown for an intentional handball that prohibits a scoring opportunity so it could even be shown if its outside the 18 and a defender handles a ball that will obviously lead to a scoring opportunity

A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the
following
• denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity
by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within
his own penalty area)
