GTAIV was my favorite. I dont do the online stuff though, when I am done the story I am usually done

same. last time I did anything online it was Ghost Recon. I had a team and we all lived in different countries so we found the best time to play for us as a group was 11PM PST. it was great. then we started getting picked off in seconds by 11 year olds that apparently had sex with everyone of our mothers so it just didnt provide fun anymore

I think my favorite Rockstar game is Red Dead Redemption 1. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition is great, too.

Video games are way different now, though. Rockstar made GTAIV, Midnight Club LA, Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire within a three year span. Now we get one big ass Rockstar game every 6-8 years and then they milk the online stuff for a long time. Honestly, I think 2/3 of the good game developers in the US and Europe went independent in the past decade so almost everything good that comes out is from Japan or independent.

Yeah, good games there.

Although I’m not a fan of them milking online content, they make so much money from it which can be (and should be) viewed as greed, but I prefer to put on blinders and see it as funding for their future projects which it also is.

RD1 was really fun. I also enjoyed RD1 Zombie expansion.. but eventually tired of it. never heard of Midnight club

Yeah, but it means we get fewer games. LA Noire and RDR2 were pretty notorious for having long hours and bad work conditions so maybe its just not something we should expect all of the time. That said, companies making games every 6-8 years is kinda brutal.

LA Noire seemed to be a pretty niche game, I did play through it once and never did replay it, but I liked it. Same with Bully.

The wait is absolutely brutal, I think all gamers can agree there. At least Rockstar usually delivers after such long waits which is more than be said for some developers.

I liked LA Noire too. I really liked Bully. I thought that was a lot of fun.

The game industry overall isn't working now IMO. There used to be lots of games coming out all the time, now hardly at all. Games take forever to make. If there's a popular game and they make a sequel, it will probably not come out until the next generation console comes out.

Concord was one of the biggest flops ever. It took 8 years to make and most reviews said it would have been "fine" I'd released 6 years ago. But in 2024 it was out of date.

Not only do games take forever to make, even then there are still stories about the workers being overworked and mistreated.

Concord wouldn't really have been fine 6 years ago. Marvel Rivals basically poached all of the Overwatch 2 players and that fanbase is obviously looking for something different. I'd argue its way harder to make a good multiplayer game than a good single player game.

Story + Graphics + Gameplay
or
Gameplay + Graphics + Boss Fights

Thats pretty much the formulas right now for single-player games. Multiplayer gaming has to appeal to as many people as possible while having a constant way of making money. You have to create a sport out of thin air and thats almost always a failing proposition.

It feels like they work really hard on less projects that have bigger names and then hype the shit out of it and throw in some lower quantity/quality games as fodder.

I wondered that too, just read it enough times from different sources I thought it might be true.

Either way, 8 years is too long. What looks good and what people want to play now, may not be the same in even 5 years.

Unrelated, but the game awards just dropped a metric ton of game announcements. 2026 is likely going to be a banner year in video games. Witcher 4. Naughty Dog maybe doing its version of the Mandalorian. Seems like a likely year for GTA6.

2025? Split Fiction will likely be massive. The 'It Takes Two' devs are basically the best at co-op gaming right now. Death Stranding 2 should be 2025. I'd guess that the Switch 2 will finally drop as Nintendo basically just had its worst software year in awhile. Metroid Prime seems like the killer app in waiting but Metroid isnt big in Japan so I suspect they'd also drop something like a new Animal Crossing and maybe a remaster of Twilight Princess or something like that.

8 years is too long.

2009-2016 was a massive dudebro era. Most of the games coming out around 2026 seem to have female protagonists now and because it takes so long for games to come out it doesn't feel as much like diversity as it should which leaves a toxic vacuum that will making gamers look terrible in the next few years. There aren't enough big games to satisfy the diversity in gamers imo.

Witcher 4
Witcher 2 and 3 are two of my favorite games so I’m pretty stoked for that one.

Borderlands 4 I’m going to wait to see more of it because although I like Borderlands, I was super hyped for 3 and it disappointed me.

What else…Okami 2 and Onimusha intrigue me, the originals were so long ago I was pretty shocked to see those IP’s again but I’d check those out also.

I never did finish 3 and I played the pre-sequel more than 3 so that summed it up for me

Bl1 was so good
Bl2 was one of the best sequel games I've played
I'm cautious on 4.. the teaser does nothing for me but I'm hopeful

Supposedly the addon DLC was pretty legit for BL3 but like yourself I didn’t invest too much time in that game.

BL1 and 2 are awesome, I agree.

And yeah the teaser was pretty underwhelming “ooo grappling hooks and seamless transitioning” okay…is it gonna have the heart of 1 and 2? That’s what I want to know

The gist I get is that this is closer to something like God of War Valhalla or the survival mode of Streets of Rage 4. Instead of a complete new games, its basically just a game based around replay value.

I generally play Fromsoft games for the exploration first and the combat second. The new game will likely be all about the combat. I'll probably pick it up on sale at some point. Probably 5th or 6th on my hype list. I suspect Split Fiction, the Naughty Dog game, and Slay the Spire 2 will be day 1 purchases.
