I was in Canton Ohio yesterday and we googled the nearest mall figuring there would be something to eat. That mall only had a JC Penney open and the doors out into the mall were locked. Looked kinda spooky. Seems a common problem up that way. It looks like the entire economy in that place just packed up and left. I wish I'd have known about the one in Akron. I would have gone. Shit like that fascinates me.

I dont think its isolated to our area but the transformation that malls are undergoing around here is amazing (dash can attest to that as he works right next to one big construction zone at metrotown - correct me if im wrong dash)

these retail property management/holding companies are knocking down malls and building mixed use residential/office tower complexes with large lower level retail component

the buzz phrase is "unlocking land value"

They had a huge mall across from the statehouse in downtown Columbus when I first moved here. I walked down to it before it closed and there was a Chinese restaurant on the first floor and a deli on the third. Nothing else. It is now a park surrounded by exactly the types of buildings you are talking about.
