1942-2012 :rip:

Revolutionized the way we watch not only football, but sports in general. He and his dad created a medium inside the NFL that changed the way we watched it, and developed an art form that is completely unique.

Godspeed Mr. Sabol

I generally don't get too bummed out when celebs pass but this one sucks. I had two NFL Films VHS tapes as a kid that I watched ad nauseum, so NFL Films was a big part of my childhood.

Steve Sabol didn't also narrate those NFL Films, did he? NFL Films are/were great.

That was John Facenda, Dash. Guess who hired him?

Yep, Sabol. Man was a film genius.

Thanks - Does the "was" mean he's also passed on? What a great voice.

Yes, he has been gone for a while, now. Facenda's nickname in those films made by Sabol is 'The Voice of God'.

NFL films could make sports clips into a symphony....just awesome visually and aurally...might have to fire a couple of them up on YouTube...

I just watched something on these guys recently, and it was EXTREMELY interesting viewing, talking about how they started, the first contract, how it grew, etc.
AND Facenda wasn't even a football fan. :D
But my GOD could he narrate like a motherfucker.

if you see the words "Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field" written down, it's almost impossible to read them in you head without that voice doing it.

Rest in Peace! He had a great vision to show football in a different light. He may be best known for his work with the NFL, but the coverage of his cameras led the way to show fans how sports should be displayed.

Just think,
would we have ESPN?
Or all the professional network programs?
