Sounds like he was one of the RV/camper crowd. I seriously doubt that the track bothers to search those things: It would take way too much time & manpower.

I've never had someone want to search my car whenever I parked in the infield at Indy. - They barely take much time to do a proper search of the bags/coolers when I walk in the pedestrian gates.
