The sound - or lack thereof - really makes that. I've been to some pretty remote places, but there's always the sound of birds or trees, or some other type of natural sound.
Death Valley is the closest I’ve ever experienced as some where with no sound. Also because of the elevation (or lack of), it just felt different.

on the side of some mountain in the middle of the Yukon was the most desolate for me. 2 hour plane ride north of Wat
I couldn't hear the silence because my heart was still racing from the helicopter landing on a makeshift landing pad made out of railroad ties at a fairly steep incline. Didn't think it was going to fit without clipping the rotors.


scuba diving has that feeling though too. completely otherworldly, just the sound of your own air.
