NASA?s Voyager spacecraft enters interstellar space, heading out of solar system - The Washington Post

Launched in 1977, travels roughly 39,000 mph and will take about 7000 years to reach the nearest solar system. Fucking space man.

I was reading about it today. There is an 8 track tape and a golden LP on board with greetings in many languages and the music of people like Tchaikovsky. Which is a nice sentiment.

Provided that Aliens have access to a Victrola and/or Technics HiFi system.

It amuses me. Imagine if something that came from another world landed and had a small triangle thingie that was translucent and flexible. How the fuck would have any clue what it was or how you play it? Weird choice.

Kind of like the movie Independance Day when they fly the copter up there with flashing lights to "open communications". What if those guys were friendly right up until we sequenced lights that said "Your mother is a whore" or something? "YOU SAY WHAT ABOUT MY MOMMA?" *pewpewpew*

Those aliens did prove to be Mac compatible though, so they weren't totally off-base with that attempt.

The Maven mission in orbit around Mars is going to observe the closest recorded passing of a comet by a planetary body in our solar system. I have a friend who's on the project. Sweet!

Watch the ?Blood Moon? Eclipse from Mercury

“From Mercury, the Earth and Moon normally appear as if they were two very bright stars,” said Hari Nair, a planetary scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, which developed and operates the MESSENGER mission for NASA. “During a lunar eclipse, the Moon seems to disappear during its passage through the Earth’s shadow, as shown in the movie.”

Wow, that is some serious planning that went into this project - glad it worked

/it seemed so much easier when Bruce Willis did it back in 98, but I guess landing on an asteroid is easier than a comet

Part of me sees manned missions to Mars as simply impossible. However, I imagine that pre 1950's everyone said that about the moon, so...

It is exciting to think that in my life time I could see that. Amazing.
