No way would you attempt to do that without a flux capacitor that has an output tolerance of at least 1.21gigawatts.

Darkstone, would using an isotope of the ions you are trying to separate help. The reasoning being if you make things a bit heavier than 1 amu, you get a wider separation in peaks and you'd know exactly which ions are which by their isotopic mass?

I have a time of flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) I use to separate and mass-select ions for my experiments. You accelerate the ions to some kinetic energy, and they separate in time by mass. Usually, I get about 1 microsecond separation of peaks 1 amu apart in mass, but now I have five or six peaks per microsecond, and I don't know which peak is which ion because they're all at the wrong times.

I also need big TOF gaps to avoid contamination in my photoelectron spectra of ions I don't want to study.

So basically, I can't do my research until I get this issue sorted out.

Which means I'll only be a candidate to be a doctor until I get it fixed and can actually do my dissertation research.
