It's kind of wierd, kind of stupid but I don't get why the media pumping this story so hard.

I'm not trying to be an ass, I understand that lying about cancer is a bad thing and it's emotional impact on people is very real. It should be reported but at the level that I have heard about it today I find myself wondering if I am that out of touch or if they just don't have shit for news stories?

I think they are doing a good job, I'm just worried they aren't getting the word out overseas. I heard some of the hostages in Algeria haven't heard about this yet.

Te'o told Notre Dame officials that he received a phone call on Dec. 6, while in attendance at an ESPN awards show in Orlando, from a number he recognized as having been that he associated with Kekua. The woman on the line during that phone call told Te'o she had had to fake her own death in order to elude drug dealers, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports, citing a source close to Te'o's family. The woman then tried to restart her relationship with Te'o.

Te'o asked for a photo with a date stamp to verify her identity, the paper reports, but wasn't convinced and then went to his family and school officials to describe the hoax.

WHAT?!?! Who gets a call from a girlfriend they've never met despite repeated attempts who calls to say they faked their own death (and by default lied about having leukemia), to avoid drug dealers no less, and thinks? Hmmm, can I see a photo?!?

How about this normal human response - "I don't know who this is, but leave me alone you crazy bitch."

This story gets crazier and crazier...

I have a hard time believing someone can be as naive as this, but we're all raised differently.

There was a time when I would have agreed.

But then I started working in IT and Info Security.

"LOOK! This email says I won the sweepstakes!"
"Did you enter a sweepstakes?"
"No. SHUT UP! You just jealous".

Two days later...

"Hey sweepstakes winner, why so sad?"
"My bank account got emptied by someone in Albania."
"Is that so?"

The trouble for T'eo is that if a hoax was perpetrated upon him, he still lied repeatedly after learning it was a hoax.

I 100% believe he was behind it from the beginning or very early on or knew it to be false and perpetuated the myth anyway. There are too many holes in his story and too many inconsistencies in the quotes they have from him.

The path to him being complicit in this is very easy and believable. To believe he was just a victim, you have to explain away a half dozen things he said in the last two months and conclude he is one of the dumbest and most gullible people in the history of the world, fell madly in love with someone he never even met over a 3-year period, and that he didn't bang other chicks on the ND campus as many students are alleging. Students, mind you, without a track record of lying.

Yeah, there's just too many holes in the story for me to buy it. I just don't believe anyone can be this naive. All 32 NFL teams are going to be investigating him. If he doesn't come clean, they'll find out the truth anyway.

ND put their "good name" on the line by supporting him after doing a private investigation...an investigation in which they never spoke to Manti. Incompetence, Notre Dame is thy name. The fact that they paid for this ticks me off a bit, but they have to protect their brand...but not talking to the player is a crappy way of protecting it.

Agreed. I also hate how some media members are saying "well, ND did an investigation." Yeah, gosh... we've never seen big-time football programs lie or distort the truth in their own internal investigations.

The solution to all this is VERY simple for Manti. If you were duped - release your phone records to a private, independent investigator that can prove you were on the phone for the hours you claim. If not, stop lying. Come clean, apologize, save what reputation you have left, and get on with your life.

Honest question about reporters in today's world.

I think the reporters of today are far more gullible than they were in the past 30 years & aren't as good at truly investigatiing stories, agree or disagree?
