Yeah, if there were multiple people in on this, it would be pretty convincing. Manti would have a voice to talk to, "family" and "friends" of his girlfriend, pictures, etc... then his only lie would be to say he met her in person. But even then, he might have believed it. The hoaxers would have just had to start the story as "Remember, we met at that party in Stanford after your game?" How many times has someone said that, you don't recall but you just agree to be polite?

If he's not in on the hoax completely, Manti is still incredibly gullible, but I think posters here are seriously underrating how convincing this might have been. The fact that other people on campus / other NFLers were convinced as well goes to show that. The intriguing question is, why?

He called a person he never me "the love of his life." I don't know if he was "in on it," but he certainly perpetuated the lies on countless occasions regardless of his own involvement in the "hoax" itself. I think that's what makes this all so spectacularly juicy/bizarre - the possibility of either (1) a conspiracy with Manti involved in it OR (2) some kind of hoax he perpetrated to cover up for someone else's elaborate hoax!
