Finally got to see it - delay of game definitely seemed ridiculous and the handball was definitely a close call per the rule. Wouldn't have called it myself for a player who's head was turned and didn't have intentions aside from not taking a ball to the gut. I just think human error and poor judgment are more often the culprit than some kind of conspiracy.

World soccer is different than us on here playing the conspiracy theory card on refs in the nhl

World soccer has documented (and ongoing) fixes. Many of them!

Sinclair and herdman wouldnt be the first to yhrow it out there

You are talking about FIFA though, right? This is not a FIFA event, no?

I definitely don't follow soccer as much as you do, jstew. And I'm not saying a conspiracy isn't possible. But something like a Canadian player maybe said something that pissed off the ref or something of that ilk seems more likely. That's all. I could definitely be wrong. Idk.

It's just not something you see called either... ever.

Like obstruction.

I think more in womens soccer, youll occasionally see a ref call games by what appears to be the letter of the law because u see more of these obscure big calls get made but then youll have a stunning number of errors of omission or simply looking the other way

Like in the last womens world cup when the brazilian was given a yellow after feigning an injury. While an obvious call, 3 other similar plays were ignored

So so amateur

It ("by the book" calls) seem to only happen in the womens game

And sure u can point to the way obstruction is called versus the way the law reads in mens soccer but you dont seem to get this bogus shit where the players are called out on something out of thin air

Mens soccer ... I know what to expect. The players know what to expect. The refs officiate this way. Its an accepted given. None of this dog and pony show like womens soccer where its as if the ref just read one of the rules as shes running downfield and its fresh in her mind so shell call it now at a crucial moment .... Or maybe she wont

I think i saw the us defenders jill fall out of her shorts when sinclair broke her knees going around her for goal 1

/womens soccer: ive said it a couple times in this thread : turrrrrrrible defense

Yeah, but at least that was because Sinclair made a good cut. The US defender had basically a less-than-50-50 shot there, because either Sinclair was going to keep going forward and the defender had to sell out for a chance at defending it, or she was going to cut and the defender had to sell out for a chance at defending that. She had to guess and Sinclair might've beaten her even if she guessed right. Not quite the same situation as Rapinoe, who was taking a corner. I understand you have to worry about the US on set pieces, but even so, there's no excuse for a shot to go in from that ang-

The handball was legit - it went off the elbow/arm of not one but two Canadian defenders, both of whom had their arms at least somewhat away from their bodies. As for the delay of game that led to the indirect free kick, well...

Its seriously terrible

If you went by the fifa laws of the game, hope solo could have been called for that same "infraction" 3 times during todays game (according to frmr cdn mens national team player Jason Devos)

I don't know that Solo would have gotten three of them - I think she had one or two times where she held the ball a bit longer than strictly necessary but for the most part she got the ball to her feet or away from her pretty quickly. Granted, for the most part she had to because we were losing and needed to push the pace, but I think she moved the ball a lot quicker than her counterpart.

As for the call the ref did make on the Canadian goalie? Pssh. I understand why there's a rule that says you can't hold onto the ball forever. But I don't think the Canadian goalie was doing anything excessive. More importantly, even if she was, why give an indirect there? You have stoppage time, just make a rule that says hey if the goalie is being a total assface about moving the ball along when her team is winning, start throwing on extra minutes to the end of the half. Goalies will stop doing things like that (and again, I don't think the goalie was trying to do that today), and it's not a ten seconds to get rid of the ball or THE OTHER TEAM GETS A SEMI-PK.

Idk.

Whether this is a fifa event is neither here nor there

Fifa is the world governing body for soccer (football). Teams will still accumulate fifa points at the olympics

Fixes happen everywhere in soccer for many reasons and fifa supposedly has a squad that investigates incidents like this right after they happen

fucking awful way to lose the late lead.

way to go CDN girls, you should be proud of your performance. (except for McLeod, you stink on ice)
They hung in with the best in the world, and deserved a better fate.

wonder how they will come out in the bronze game? like caged lions, or beaten kitties.

on the bold

You dont need to make a rule ... Its there

First a warning (mcleod said she didnt receive one during this game)
Next infraction yellow card

Thats whats usually expected in soccer ... All bets are off in the womens game (or are they :eyebrows: )

Btw the rule is "handled the ball deliberately"

That was deliberate?

One gal gets blasted from 3 yards away (arms not extended) next gal turns to side as the ball is about to take her right tit off

Meanwhile rapinoe controls the ball down to her feet in the box with her upper arm in the 70th minute

Caman!

I think you could reasonably interpret it both ways. The first girl it went past definitely had her arm tucked (I don't see any "away" at all there) and the second girl it was kind of in between. I'm not saying there is not an argument for it being legit, but I've watched the video several times and can't decide definitively one way or another. You factor in having to be more certain at real-time speeds and the fact that you just made a rare call should lean the ref towards no handball.

I know that the "delay of game" is the more ridiculous call here, but the hand ball is the essential one. Even in the box, an indirect kick like that maybe has a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 chance of being a goal. PK puts you at about a 70-80% chance of scoring.

Sorry, I should have phrased it better. I know there's a rule there already, but I'm wondering why it isn't just added stoppage time as opposed to an indirect.

I will say this... the U.S. might have scored late anyway. We'll never know. It's a shitty way to win and a shitty way to lose.

I do know that the worst job I ever had was reffing kids' soccer games. Fucking awful, awful work.

Mcleadass (canadas goalie) was in no-womans land on morgans winner. If she stays on her line she probably palms it over the cross bar

But instead she is half way out to challenge the cross :L

So yah ... U.S prob would have scored anyways lol

It doesn't have to be deliberate. There's such a thing as negligent hand balls as well. If I'm running with my arms over my head and somebody kicks the ball into them, the refs gonna call it on me even if I wasn't facing the play and had no idea the ball was coming. Similarly, if the ball deflects in on net and hits my arm when it otherwise was going in (ie it wouldn't have hit my body) but I wasn't trying to stop it, the ref will still call a PK even though it wasn't deliberate. If it WAS deliberate the ref will call a PK and red card me.

I understand that's not how the handling the ball rule is WRITTEN, but it's pretty much the standard way refs call it. If you think that should be changed either in writing or in practice, I'd not object. And again, this situation never should have happened in the first place. Fucking six second rule. That's in the same boat - it's in the rules but NOBODY holds goalies to that standard, which is what everyone is so angry about.

Reffing any kids sporting event is pretty rough.

A) The kids don't know the rules.
B) The PARENTS don't know the rules.
C) You don't have any sort of reffing organization backing you up, so the above parents have no compunctions against verbally skewering you.
D) The parents get waaaaaaaaaay too into it.

Basically kids sports would be better without parents.

There is no "negligence" interpretation in the fifa laws of the game . Its either deliberate or not

The ref is supposed to make the determination between either

Ball to hand - not deliberate

Hand to ball - deliberate

There is also an "unexpected ball" interpretation that ref should have used

She shit the bed all around on these 2 calls

/maybe she truly was reading the rulebook as she was reffing today :noidea:

//hope she gets to page 113 before the next game she refs

///if there is another game for her
