Cliff Notes version:

Joseph Kony, head of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), has been abducting children and forcing them into his army (30,000 or so to this point). He makes the boys soldiers and the girls sex slaves. He makes them kill their own parents and mutilate their own people.

He's the worst kind of scum.

The Kony 2012 movement is basically to raise awareness among the people of the world of Kony's crimes. The US government will not continue using military resources to find and capture him unless the American people show an interest. So they're making Kony a celebrity. Making everyone know the name, know who he is, and want him to be captured. Making it a point of national (and international) interest will keep major governments on the hunt for Kony.

The video, though, is excellent, and I recommend you watch it. If you don't want to or don't have time, the above is a fair summary.

It's a shame it took this long for Kony's name to be infamous. Falling Whistles is a pretty good organization that I've had contact with in regards to this issue. Invisible Children is a great one as well. That situation is just despicable. Makes me ill.

The reason I trust what they're doing and stand for: they're not asking for money right now. They're asking for a guy to be known for his horrendous actions. They're looking to make a man infamous. I will gladly take the time to raise awareness and get people involved. It's asking for the gov't to get involved, sure, and that equates to tax dollars, but I'd rather my tax dollars be doing THIS work than paying for another raise for some halfwit politician.

I'm all for getting rid of this fucker, but here is my problem with the whole Kony phenomenon:

This is essentially asking for the United States to step in and do something about him (eliminate him by force). How many of the people pushing this are anti U.S. military in the middle east? It's ok for us to get involved in certain scenarios but not others?

How many people could point Uganda out on a map? Why do they deserve our attention more so than other areas in trouble?

Is Darfur saved? Was Wall Street properly occupied? Haven't heard about Haiti in a while, I take it everything is going well there. Let's try and take care of 1 trendy movement before we move on to the next shall we.

Lastly, why is it news to anybody that central Africa is a shit hole?

I know I'm going to get murdered for this post, but I just feel that it's a lot of hype and not a whole lot of action will be taken.

The US as a whole is way too impatient to ever finish anything.

That means citizens, too. We aren't willing to wait. We want it right now or not at all. If we can't get it right now, we find something else to want right now.
