Indycar Racing News | Racer.com - Indy 500: Quick safety team response key in critical Hinchcliffe crash
In the impact, which flattened the right side of the chassis, one of the suspension wishbones penetrated the Dallara safety cell, and subsequently caused the majority of the physical damage Hinchcliffe received. RACER has confirmed through multiple sources that Hinchcliffe had the steel wishbone enter and exit his right leg, then enter his upper left thigh, and continue into his pelvic region before it came to a stop.
The suspension component pinned the 28-year-old in the car, leading the safety team to cut the wishbone from the chassis to allow Hinchcliffe's extraction.
Given the lack of interest in Indy nowadays and the subsequent loss of revenue as a result of that, I get the feeling Indycar safety is lagging somewhat drastically behind the F1.I wish Hinch the best. He's gonna have a LOOONG road to recovery.
When I first saw the crash, I thought the outer barrier did well and absorbed a lot of energy. Then I saw the in car replay. The entire suspension just collapsed.
I went from "thank God" to "OH MY GOD" in a second and a half. No excuse for any external component to be able to pierce the survival cell of the car. Some major changes are gonna come out of this.

What's going on that in all these crashes cars are going airborne?

Too bad that toddler wasn't at Wrigley Field in 2003, I bet Moises Alou makes that catch and the Cubbies go on to play in the World Series.
By the way, if you haven't seen the ESPN 30 for 30 'Catching Hell' which goes into very good detail about Steve Bartman as well as Bill Buckner and the Mookie Wilson dribbler between his legs in '86, it's excellent and I recommend it.
