Trainers out toe check on Karstens. They're checking out his knee. He looks like he'll stay in the game.

Karstens, by the way, has thrown 13 consecutive shutout innings.

Karstens's night is finished with two outs in the seventh. Resop is coming on with Carlos Lee at first. Pirates are handing a 1-0 lead to their bullpen, and now that Bud Norris is about to come out, I'm feeling pretty good about the Pirates' chances to get back to .500 today.

The hardest part for the band is agreeing on choosing songs because we all come from different styles. The drummer hates it when I want to do a classical(ish) peice`

Karstens has been phenomenal. Just, insanely good. I really wish he could've finished the 7th though...because I don't like our relief lately. 8th inning has been an absolute mess (Veras...he's been awful lately).

After tonight's outing, Karstens is qualified for ERA ranking, and has the 7th best in the National League. Morton is 10th, Maholm is 13th, and Correia is 32nd. Having four of five starters in the top 50 in the league in ERA is pretty good, especially with three of them in the top 13.

Resop with a great 1/3 inning. >l

You're right about Karstens. The kid knows how to pitch. I don't think he'll keep his ERA under 3 all year, but I do think he'll keep it under 4.

And I'm comfortable with Resop and Hanrahan out of the bullpen, but that's about it. McCutchen's been lucky, Moskos, Wood, and Watson are unproven, and Veras has, as you said, been frightening. He's just walking too many guys.

I hate watching Ronny Cedeno hit. I hope this batting him second experiment is over now.

Veras is like a freaking rollercoaster. Has a fantastic fastball, but of late, can't control it at all. I want early season Veras back, he was lights out. At least now we're into the 'stros pen too. And in the meat of the order (now that Cedeno is out that is).

Veras is unhittable. He's either working well in the zone, or working so far out of it that no one needs to swing.

He and Wood drive me NUTS. Wood's been slightly better the last 2 weeks or so, but Cedeno batting 2nd is a bad idea all around. I under stand Hurdle's thought process (he was 5-10 against tonights starter), but still...it's Cedeno. We need to draft a big name SS next year.

No need to draft one on need. We don't know what our needs will be by the time he gets to the Majors. BPA is the best draft strategy in baseball. With every pick.

I like Wood better than Cedeno, for what it's worth. He's got more pop and doesn't swing out of the zone nearly as much. He's also got a lot more upside. He's hitting .327 or something like that in June, and today he's 0-2, but he's driven the ball very well in both of those at bats.

Great read by McCutchen there. Pitcher broke the plane with his front leg and 'Cutch was off.
