OT: If you could own a team which of the major Sports would you choose?

Watching the Olympics got me to ponder this question.

NBA
NHL
MLB

Which of the major sports would most interest you in being an owner? Which TEAM would most interest you? I realize this is the NHL board, but try to take everything into account. Not just the sport, but the business side as well.

I'll give my answer & the reasons why later tonight.

NFL for sure simply because of the TV revenue.

I believe it is virtually impossible to lose money with an NFL franchise.

Hmmm...as far as being a successful revenue producing owner: NFL. The owners flat out pwnd the players in their CBA, there's no guaranteed contracts, you can throw money around without it *really* hurting you in the pocket (although it may in the field). If I wanted to win? NBA probably, because if you're rich enough and buy in the right market, you can win. All you need is money, popular market, and one star, and the others will flock. If I wanted to enjoy my job? NHL/MLB.

MLB: St. Louis (all they do is winnnn winnnn, and they're a respectable franchise, history)
NBA: OKC (I just like them more than the other star-laden teams)
NFL: Chicago (Good following, I like the city, chance to be a winner)
NHL: Buffalo (Because gosh darnit they need to win)

yup - the teams are in profit before a single ticket is sold.
so for financial reasons them. I don't know much about the situations of each franchise, but i would probably pick someone like Indiana, who has limited competition for pro-sport dollars, and a franchise QB just starting his ride.


seems like a lot of bullshit in the NHL ownership circles. As many as 6 franchises are reported to be in financial trouble, and if you ARE making money, then millions of dollars are being siphoned off to carry those weak-ass teams.

If I could pick a team it would be the Mariners, not because that would be my preference, but because I would fucking love to tell Howard Lincoln and Chuck Armstrong to hit the road.

TBQH my personal favorite team to own would be the Seattle Sounders.

I'd own a Hockey team, and the reason is pretty simple. I really don't know a whole lot about the other sports.

Plus it seems pretty easy comparatively.

MLB you have to arrange for 160 games a year, a minor league system as complicated as the tunnels under the Smithsonian, and players who take weeks off because of a hangnail. Plus you have the problem of having to reschedule games because of weather.

NFL you have to deal with rosters of hundreds, plus you only have 8 games a year at home to turn a profit. Plus, you will have to employ a shit load of lawyers to help you not lose a running back or linebacker when they get busted for drugs or murder, respectively.

NBA you have to deal with... people like Kobe and LeBron.

NHL Players, and by extension "hockey people" are usually pretty easy to deal with. Your roster is manageable, and the minor leagues is pretty much one team to develop your players. Not a crazy schedule, and a decent amount of games to make your money. Plus the fans are as loyal as the fans in any sport.

I'd go with a hockey team. Although I, too, would love to own the Orioles.

As for who I'd own. Really don't care. Probably a Canadian team, just because that's what you should do. Not the Leafs though. Fuck the Leafs. I'd also own the Jackets just for the ability to walk into Howson's office and punch him in the junk.

Leafs operating profit was $81m last year, more than the next two highest teams combined (Habs / NYR).

there was a very low ranking EPL team that a business I worked for wanted to buy and we put together the offer package for it and our plan to run it. it sat 40,000 sold out every game and was always bottom of the league. made a profit every year (cant say name as we are still under a confidentiality contract on it) but that would be the team I would love to own. other than that it would an NFL team. they are pretty much a license to print money for most teams


I would stay away from NHL teams. I think the league is the most diabolical next to NBA teams in how they are run and the fans are fucking idiots for the most part in my city

There isn't enough money on this earth to make me compromise my standards like that.

The Ravens and Yankees are very profitable too. But I'd kill myself before being associated with them in any way.
