Under this premise, forbidding people from killing someone is restriciting ones freedom(s).

What premise? Its just fact. Youre right, if citizens were allowed to kill people and the government passed a law changing that; then that too would be restricting their freedom.

That's the world we live in. Everything is labeled nowadays.

I can't help but agree. Would it be fair to say that a lot of people throwing labels around carelessly are just a product of their environment?

Would definitely be fair. Unfortunately many people nowadays feel the need to be a part of something. So they are quick to label themselves and just lump others into a stereotype.

I really wish more people would just do their own research and develop their own stance and belief. Be a true independent.

And I definitely find myself doing it sometimes... Just how things are now. But I am firm believer in independent thinking. I always research both sides to every debate or subject and develop my own solution. I do my best to push others to do the same and not just read CNN and/or Fox News and hop on some bandwagon.

Well I was goofing around with the wording as some liberals often blame criminal behavior on being products of their environments. So yeah, my endgame if Jeff agreed was to call him a liberal. All in good fun.

However I agreed with his next two posts so I gave up on my childish actions.

I'm proud of my children that they were able to play nice after all. :)

/That was an analogy, not a label.

man this thread got some legs on it.

i don't see why the french government cant just make whatever laws they want. if they want to opress religious freedom go right ahead. probably can't call themselves a country with freedom of religion, but then what the feauk do they care?

lots of countries don't practice freedom of religion. that's their choice. i'm sure the french government could care less what the muslims think, otherwise they wouldn't pass the law.

if this was the us, that shit woulnd't stand, and nor should it, since this is a country that ostensibly believes in freedom and tolerance of religion (whether that is actually true in real life is debatable).

I know a Muslim girl who wears the hood thing (I can't remember what it's called) completely of her own choice. She's the only one in her family who does, so no one's forcing her. If the US passed a law that she couldn't wear it, she would be crushed, feel like some major part of her was taken away, stomped on, spit at, and thrown in an incinerator. She wears it because she likes to be open about her faith, because she likes to be modest. She always wears all her shirts up to her neck and long sleeves and long pants at all times. That's her prerogative. And it should always be her prerogative.

I'm not a bleeding heart, and I tell people to suck it up all the time, but, that article aside, I still see no reason for this law to be in place. There are 2000 of these women, how much harm could they possibly do to the French society? And if their husbands and/or fathers are the reason these women are wearing these burqas, then passing a law won't save them from the men in their lives. Those men will remain just as oppressive and abusive, and I can only see this law compounding the problem.

Domestic violence laws don't prevent people from beating their spouses and children, murder laws don't stop people from killing, r*pe laws don't stop people from raping. What makes anyone think that an anti-burqa law will stop the oppression of Muslim women by their husbands and fathers?

Wait. Are you saying she wears a head scarf? Totally different, dude.

Is it, though? Physically, perhaps the meaning behind it, sure. But the fact that she has that freedom is what's important. If she wore a burqa, she'd still be my friend.

Yeah, the only conceivable point of the law is just to fuck with Muslims. Not sure that's a wise choice. They tend to get uppity.
