People looked through what he said and saw his heart.
No one was ever offended, even when he used insults that would start a riot if said by anyone else.

Funniest thing in the history of everything was how he had Frank Sinatra help him impress a girl.

Feb. 13, 1976. My wife to be and I went to see Rickles at the Riviera in Las Vegas. After the show, we went to the Court House to get married. It was around 1 am. Long line since it was Valentines Day. They closed at 2 am for their lunch, opening again at 3 am. We went back to our hotel room, planning to come back later that day. We were sitting around the room, I looked at her and said, "You didn't by that dress to go see Don Rickles, lets go get married." Back to the Court House and we got married. It was 4:45 in the morning. 41 years ago and still happily married.
