Very nice. I was actually just coming over to post that, heh.
saw man of steel. very much enjoyed it
I enjoyed it, too. I understand the complaints a lot of folks have with it, but when it comes to Superman, you really can't win. I do think that some of the things folks were complaining about could be used to set up a very good second installment with Lex Luthor as the villain, but I won't share specifics on my ideas for that lest I give away something about this film.
saw this one on Netflix recently.
no expectations going in, but really enjoyed it
i think what they can do to stay away from what failed before with Luthor is that they can have Lex actually use the technology that was left on the planet after the battle you know there will be pieces and weapons everywhere. it will be better than the usual kryptonite story line. I dont mind some of the changes to the story line but am very very happy with the way they showed his powers and how they impacted the environment. I loved that they also had lois discover the secret right away. she was a way too smart a reporter to never catch that in the books/other movies. the actor that played Zod was fantastic. and his mini background was my favourite yet of him. very pleased with that. Just enough Perry White and no Jimmy Olsen which is always good.
I just liked that he wasn't perfect. This was his first team dealing with a true supervillain, and he didn't do it just right like Superman always seems to. There should be a learning curve with superheroes, no matter how powerful they are, and this Superman was clearly just trying to figure things out as he went. We may see a more refined, "boy scout" Superman going forward in the series, but it seemed natural to me that he didn't completely have his act together right from the get-go like he always seems to in other tellings of his story.
the fact hundreds if not thousands died was interesting. you barely ever saw anyone die in the Reeve superman movies and even in the Brandon Routh Superman Returns. this was different. I liked that a lot. showed he could not save everyone. i also like what he did to that Drone at the end lol (although the tax payers may not like it)
That's kind of what I meant. When it came down to it, you could even say Superman lost this one because he wasn't able to save everyone. People complain about Superman because he's too perfect and never loses. When someone actually makes him imperfect, though, they got jumped on. I guess you really can't make everyone happy with a Superman movie.
I do expect a smaller death toll in the next film. Superman has more experience now. He can make some adjustments and take precautions to save more people this time, perhaps. In any case, I do believe we will see character growth from Superman for once, and actual evolution.
The only big knock I have against Man of Steel is that, after the big battle and all that destruction and chaos, they never had Superman go to contemplate what had happened, really assess that he hadn't saved everyone, that while maybe he couldn't save everyone, he could have at least done a better job than he did, and make a promise to himself that he would be smarter in the future. I also thought he should have taken more time dealing with the demise of Zod, who, as far as he knows right now, is the only other of his race still alive in the universe. I thought that was a missed opportunity, but again it's something which could be revisited in the next film if they choose to, and it could make for some strong character development if they do it right.
