Canada's Santo Condorelli had the lead 80m into the 100m freestyle, but finished just out of the medals. I thought it was gold for Canada for a second there. He finished only .03 seconds off the bronze, crazy finish.

Honestly wonder if that is a record (wherever he ends up after these games) that will last for 50 years or longer. The total medals seems beatable as they add more events. But the 20 golds.... nobody else even has 10!!

It will be really tough. I don't think it can happen in anything but swimming. And even there, someone might come along as talented as Phelps, but they would also need to specialize in middle-distance free/fly, because that also gives you a shot at the IM medals. Additionally, you need to be from a powerhouse nation to win the relay medals. Then you need to stay healthy over a long period of time. And you need a bit of magic / luck along the way.

I can't see it done. Everything lined up perfectly.

He's shorter than average for the sport, no? Probably did him in.

Too bad. Probably the only individual Olympian I cared about thanks to his Stone Cold warmup routine

He was doing so well, I thought for a long time he had a shot at a yuge upset. Then was certain he medalled.

Had to watch the replay 3 times and still not sure he was outtouched for 3rd.

Darned good showing nevertheless.

"Bronze is the new Gold" (tm) so don't try anything Canadian Olympic Committee. I know lawyers.

icymi, after Penny won the bronze, the cbc swimming coverage guy opposite Friedmann spoke into a hot mic. I heard it happenning but was too far away from the tv to hear what he said ... they just talked about it on the radio and cbc was forced to apologize for it ... it was regarding the 14 year old swimmer the chinese had in that relay

he (byron macdonald) said ... "she went out like stink ..." at which point I thought in my head upon hearing this and then thinking of the words that rhyme with stink ... OH NOOOOO ...

"... and died like a pig"

he lost his spot on the podium because of his last 2-5 meters and his size ... guy was outreached at the finish

Silver = 6 ft 7
Bronze = 6 ft 6
Santo = 6 ft 2
