Seabrook rode Duncan Keith's coattails for several years and gets way too much credit for calming down Captain Serious in the penalty box several years ago. Now that Keith is past his prime (did Seabrook ever have a prime?!?), the chickens as they say have come home to roost.

And following up on the forward side, same drill

Toronto (68.6%)
Nashville
Winnipeg
Calgary
TB
Washington
Vegas
Philly
Buffalo
Dallas (57.1%)

Arguably, more SC contenders here than in the D list.

Surprising to me, EDM is not here. But hey, they only have 2 F and play them like 30 minutes a game, so I guess I should not be surprised.

This also tends to underscore the voodoo that is the Bruins. Not surprised, they only have one forward line (best in hockey IMO). How the heck do they do it? Not overspending in either category and arguably get better results year after year dollar for dollar. Another reason for me to hate them.

St Louis (28.5% of cap)

Outside of #10, not a lot of legit SC contenders in this group. Is it fair to say then that a team should be very, very cautious in using Cap space on defence? Or is this just a case of most/all of these teams made one bad signing and overpaid for an overrated defenceman? :noidea:
I know last season is last season but 3 of the 4 conference finalists from last year are on that list.

Josi for 8 years seems like it should have happened two years ago, not now.

/I'd rather have Kesler than Josi on the books
To be fair, this could be compared to a few other teams - SJ in particular.

At least the Ducks finally realized it wasn’t working and are trying to think a little differently instead of big money veterans everywhere.

While Seabrook is probably a good example of "paying for past performance" I'm not sure he fits the points-based narrative. If my count is accurate 45 defenders had more points in the 2014-15 season (and he even played in all 82 games). His extension was actually signed right before his big points/goals season, it just didn't kick in until afterwards.

Good point, I was probably thinking Keith.

Hard to keep your "Overrated D-men in Chicago" straight sometimes.

This is sure to be received well in Toronto.

I'm sure that Ovi has watched and examined them very closely and isn't just trying to tweak the fears/pressure that he knows is out there.

Some of the spending balance is a little luck of the draw based on timing. When you've got a couple of key guys still playing on ELCs, your spending is going to be skewed away from that position a bit. The next year you could have the same exact roster but have a 10_% move in how your spending is divided.

Balance and good contract negotiating (eg. their top 3 Fs cost about $14M less than those of the Leafs).

Throw in some good integration of players on their ELC and they've got a good formula.

Now they're about to lose (or re-sign) 2 serviceable defensemen that cost them about $7M combined. That formula could be tested this offseason.

I do miss Carlyle a tiny bit though.

/randy is being inducted into the Jets hall of fame ring of toasters or whatever the hell they call it. It’s cute how the Jets treat former Jets/Yotes as the same even though their part of the Yotes but whatevs I guess

On the flip side, the Coyotes having a Dale Hawerchuk night considering he never wore the Yotes jersey is downright blasphemous as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'; if anyone wants to retire my number I'm fine with it. 1000 games, 0 games don't matter to me.

The number is 69, bro. You know it is!

Lidstrom had 14 more points that season and the players were nearly identical possession-wise. Never saw that as robbery.

If anything, I found it more egregious that Weber came anywhere near Karlsson the next season despite having 30 fewer points.
