Is anybody actually winning second halves of back to backs or is this just a guaranteed win for the fresh team at this point?

The opponent isn't always fresh, I haven't confirmed the accuracy but I read that the Rangers have only faced a fresh team in that situation 3 times in 3 seasons. But then again Gary Bettman doesn't make jokes at their expense

Which reminds me of something I noticed on CapFriendly yesterday. Was thinking about a certain team who has heavily skewed their Cap towards forwards (not naming names) and was wondering if that is a good move.

So I looked at total spend on F and D to see if there was any wisdom to be had. Where do successful teams spend their precious cap dollars?

Looking at the current season, here are the Top 10 teams ranked by how much of the Cap they have devoted to their D. I mean, D is important, right? Right?? Well,

San Jose (39.7% of cap)
Florida
New Jersey
NYRangers
Philly
Carolina
Minnesota
Arizona
Chicago
St Louis (28.5% of cap)

Outside of #10, not a lot of legit SC contenders in this group. Is it fair to say then that a team should be very, very cautious in using Cap space on defence? Or is this just a case of most/all of these teams made one bad signing and overpaid for an overrated defenceman? :noidea:

I can't say much here because my team will be here soon once Jones and Weresnki come due.

All big contracts are paying for past performance, and it's probably more pronounced for defensemen. And to a large degree "performance" is probably goals/points focused which isn't a good indicator of how effective a defender is. That's how overrated defenders (*cough*Seabrook*cough) get the big deals.

I don't think 30% of the cap is too unreasonable. I think the ideal may be 60% for forwards, 30% for D and 10% on goalies. 60% focus on scoring goals, 40% on preventing them. Could be an effective strategy.

While Seabrook is probably a good example of "paying for past performance" I'm not sure he fits the points-based narrative. If my count is accurate 45 defenders had more points in the 2014-15 season (and he even played in all 82 games). His extension was actually signed right before his big points/goals season, it just didn't kick in until afterwards.
