I understand. I just don't think Babs is interested in that if there's another route.

I think if the other route is trading Gardiner for dimes on the dollar (I expect the return would be at least a little better than "pennies" ) Babcock would be able to understand.

You really think it would be dimes? He's on a good contract, capable of 30+ pts, good possession puck-moving defenceman. If they can package him to get another first rounder while trading for a Lindholm or similar I'd be glad.

To the Oilers + JVR for pick #4? Too much? Not enough?

You don't have to convince me of his value BBB  . You never know I suppose, but I don't think they'd get proper value.

And I'd rather just keep him than trade him for a first rounder (especially if the first rounder is fairly late, as I imagine it is).

I think people now at least realize that he's good. But I generally get the impression that they're still underrating him.

LOL this I know.

I would rather keep him and get another but I just don't know exactly how it would all fit together cap-wise and position-wise.

Hasn't one of Gardiner or Rielly had issues playing on their "bad" side, too? I'd be lying if I said I watched a lot of Leaf hockey last season so maybe I'm wrong.

It would be peak Edmonton if they moved that pick for anything other than a top d-man.

Didn't Chiarelli already say something about how it would have to be for one of Subban and... Shea Weber?

Man, trading that #4 pick for Shea fucking Weber would be such an Oilers move...

Ya know, it'll never happen, but if I were Nashville I'd consider moving him for 1st and one of their assorted forwards. Of course, I don't value Weber like the Preds do, and I don't think they have the defensive depth after moving Jones.

If I'm Nashville and I'm just concerned with "value" rather than some commitment to trying to win now? I probably make that trade in a heartbeat.

I think you may have misinterpreted which way I was approaching this from, pix.

Nah, I get it I think. We're on the same page in regards to Webers value, right? An advantage they'd have in this case is Edmonton would be desperate to get an elite name defenseman.

Sabres have acquired the negotiating rights for Jimmy Vesey from Nashville for a 3rd round pick.

Here's hoping they can work something out by August 15. I'd love to see him skating on the wing with Eichel and Reinhart next season.

I don't rate Weber much but he'd be worth whatever trade Edmonton made for him. At this point, anything is better than nothing, and sharing the ice with McDavid & Co. is pretty much a guarantee that he can keep producing at a 50 pt clip for the foreseeable future.

Vesey's agent already said he isn't signing lol. Waste of a draft pick.

Meh, I put about as much stock in an agent's statement as I do in Gary Bettman's. He's doing his job by presenting a face to the media. Unless he's limiting himself to playing for a single team, he's got no actual benefit to waiting because of the entry level contract restrictions.

Big picture they didn't give up all that much and get two months to try to sign a top-6 caliber guy. I'll be disappointed if they don't, but I'm not going to lament the loss of one of four 3rd round picks.

I'd agree were it not for the fact the agent said the same thing when he was with the Preds and that seemed as legit as can be.

Things can always change though, of course - both Drouin and Hamonic asked for trades that they then un-asked for.

I'm thinking there had to be more behind the scenes with the situation in Nashville than we're hearing about. With the potential for a couple million dollars on the line (pro-rated potentially) if he had signed last year, I don't know why you wouldn't do that if there wasn't a lot more to the story than simply wanting to be UFA, given that UFA status gives you no benefit other than picking your team.
