Maybe loophole is the wrong term, but all loopholes are done within "the clearly stated and explained rule(s)". If not no one would ever get away with them. So I don't know what to call this but loophole is close enough for me.

IMO, they need to make a new class of RFA for these situations, whereby the drafting team can't match an offer but receives some sort of compensation if the player opts to go that route.

Well, while it's kind of just a fun exercise let's see what comes up when we google the definition.

"an ambiguity or inadequacy in the law or a set of rules."

That the player can do this isn't ambiguous, so that's out. Is it an "inadequacy"? Well, if one thinks that the purpose of the rule is to restrict/trap the player to the team that drafted him forever then I suppose it is inadequate. But it seems to me like it adequately serves the purpose it's supposed to serve, which I see as setting parameters for both sides in signing drafted players.

There all technically within the rules. I wouldn't say that they're clearly stated, otherwise people wouldn't have to "search" for them in the first place.

Well. I stated that loophole may not be the best term.

Have fun shouting from the rooftops that you are, without a doubt, the smartest person on the interwebs though.

Let me ask one question before I leave your usual pissing contest; did you not understand what the previous poster meant? Or were you being kind of a pompous dick?

It seems to me more and more of your posts are falling into the latter category.

Some folks are calling this a “loophole.” It’s not. It’s just part of the CBA. It’s the other side of the coin that saw Colorado trade away the rights to WHL Red Deer’s Conner Bleackley to Arizona at the deadline, with the most likely outcome that the Coyotes choose not to sign the 2014 first-rounder and instead get a compensatory draft pick in return.

...

Whatever your opinion of Vesey is right now, let me leave you with this: I’d much rather live in a hockey world where players have these sorts of rights than the hockey world of the Original Six era, when they hardly had any rights at all. And you could fill a book with words that GMs have told players that haven’t turned out to be true in the end – I have personally witnessed agents yelling at them over the phone for breaking promises made to NHL stars.

This is the business, and it ain’t always pretty.

I didn't see that as the only two possibilities. Maybe I was wrong about that?

I also may be wrong about this but I think that the word "loophole" has a negative connotation, like the person using it is being sneaky or shady or semi-deceitful or whatever adjective fits. I don't think that it's fair to call what Vesey did any of those things, so I pointed out that it was not the right word. That's it. I don't think dash minded or thought I was calling him stupid, but I'll apologize without hesitation if he did.

I hope he recovers soon enough in order to be traded to Vancouver in the summer.

Cool. I know the use of loophole is wrong. Let's call it the N.C. Double Agent rule and now you can be more at ease.

I should also probably clarify that when I say that I don't think Vesey was being shady or deceitful I'm referring only to the exercising of his right to not sign and become a UFA, not to the overall way he conducted himself in the process. But while Poile is bringing that conduct up as well his real problem here is with him not signing. I don't think we'd be reading anything negative about the process if he'd gotten Vesey's name on a contract in the end, he'd save that for his memoirs.

Maybe he'll find a way in that is well within the clearly defined rules.

I suggest he buys a fucking ticket.
