I think the end of the article sums up what a slimeball the gerbil truly is...

“Can you believe this run of injuries,” Bettman wrote in a Dec. 17, 2011, email. “Couturier just took a puck to the head.”

Shanahan replied: “Another busy night.”

“How bad?” Bettman wrote.

“Just a couple plays but one on a Boston player and one on Mtl player,” Shanahan wrote. “As it turns out I think only the Boston MIGHT get a small suspension. The Mtl player picks the head but the NJ players leans ‘just prior’. No injury and no history. Very similar to Malone/Campoli (but in their favor this time)”

“Any more concussions?” Bettman replied.

“Not so far,” Shanahan replied.

“Night is young!” Bettman wrote.

This is bad for the NHL

It's going to be difficult to stop the Oilers form getting the #1 pick when even the linesmen are in on the tank.

I don't believe I've seen one blow an offside call as bad as they did at the end of the game since the first lockout. Or was it the second lockout?

I am 1000% convinced that if ARI were n the bottom 4, they would win the pingpong drop. Problem is, the "Disasters in the Desert" (TM) don't know how to tank. If they wanted Matthews, all they had to do was keep ASG MVP John Scott and actually, ya know, play him 14 mpg.

They need to move on from Dave Tippett, if I had to watch 82 games of Coyotes hockey, I think I would blow my brains out.

All I know is David Poile is pissssssed.

I wish he would stop talking about this, he's making me hate him.

Nothing says "greedy" quite like not signing a contract so that you can continue living like a poor student and sharing a car with your brother for a couple of years before choosing an option that, while increasing your freedom somewhat, has pretty much no financial benefit.

I'll never feel bad for anybody in situations like this. GM's get to game the players via the RFA system for, what, 8 years? Letting a player game the GM's once in a while ain't so bad.

The thing is Poile could have probably kept him if he'd tried to sign him after his freshman or sophomore year, but of course he didn't want to sign him then so it didn't happen. Apparently he thinks that the GM should be the only one who has any say in that though.

Until they close this loophole with NCAA drafted players, this kind of stuff is going to happen. I mean, it sucks for the team that has invested time and money with the player, but really there's not much else you can do presently.

/Flames are trying to ink Mark Jankowski, I hear they are getting close.

I wish people would stop referring to this as a "loophole". That's not what it is. What's being exercised here is simply the clearly stated and explained rule.

I also think Poile is the most overrated GM in the NHL and should've been fired a decade ago. Don't know how one guy can get so much credit for being at the helm of a team for 15 years and having produced literally no goalscorers and having won exactly 2 playoff series.

And that doesn't touch the 15 years he spent running the Capitals in which they won 7 playoff series in total. 9 playoff series wins in 30 years. Bang up job that is.

Is feature a better word :noidea:

To me a crystal clear and known part of a rule being exercised is not a "loophole". It's a core part of a written rule that was explicitly agreed to.

Yeah, agreed that loophole is not the best word to use.

Maybe loophole is the wrong term, but all loopholes are done within "the clearly stated and explained rule(s)". If not no one would ever get away with them. So I don't know what to call this but loophole is close enough for me.

IMO, they need to make a new class of RFA for these situations, whereby the drafting team can't match an offer but receives some sort of compensation if the player opts to go that route.
