This takes me back to the claiming of Martin Gerber... what's the harm, right? Someone has to play goalie. Until that someone does OK and you slide up the standings (and down the draft).

I have no issue with the flames sliding up the standings

These NBC announcers keep jocking Holtby today, but they keep talking about how he has more "confidence" than when he was younger and that being the difference.

Holtby had confidence from day 1 and his stats from his first 3 years are almost identical to the last two. The only difference was that in '13-'14 Oates insisted he play a different style and play deep in his own net which didn't play to his strengths and didn't match his personality/skills as a goaltender. Mitch Korn came in and let Holtby be Holtby. The other difference is that the defense in front of him has grown better and better over the years.

Aren't these guys at NBC paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to know what they are talking about? Isn't their full time job to study hockey and know the players? I mean, I have a full-time job and I know more than any of them about Holtby. What a bunch of dumb dickbags. Be better at your fucking job. Keith Jones is the only guy on their crew that ever seems to have done his homework and knows what he's talking about.

Washington/Chicago could probably be the Stanley Cup final so we got an early preview today. Thoughts about the trade deadline tomorrow? Been lots of trades this weekend but i think it could be slow tomorrow. Don't know why TSN starts its trade deadline coverage at 8 AM est.

The announcing team is on NHL payroll, remember. They get their talking points every day. They praised the Phaneuf trade. Yes men with the mission to draw in casual fans. Like a diatribe in a movie that is an awkward explanation in a conversation designed to fill in plot details for the person who never read the book.

So yeah, you want them to know what they are talking about, but they are paid to talk about what the NHL wants them to talk about. Casual fans understand "goalie confidence". A casual fan is not going to understand the way Holtby has shifted his weight forward allowing him to play lower using more of that giant body to cover more of the actual net.


That said,

Mitch Korn is a fucking wizard. I mean, yeah he keeps being given guys with immense talent. But Jesus he smooths out every single wrinkle and turns them into monsters.

I am sending my son to his goalie camp this summer even if it means I have to sell one of the other children.
