They have 15 guys signed for next year at $51 million, with Hoffman and Ceci both RFA. Assuming those two come in combined, oh, $8 million, they'll have at most $15 million to pay 7 guys and assuming they want to be a better team, that should put them pretty tight against the cap.

Several of those spots will be filled by part-timers from this year: Puempel, Dzingle (who I'm loving so far), Claesson, and Paul are all cheaper, better replacements for Neil, Chiasson, Wiercioch, etc. . That really should not be an issue.
And if Dion totally regresses away from Babcock, well...

Can we stop acting like Babcock made a 30 year old a better player, please? He played him on the second pairing with a capable young defenseman. He just used the player as he should be used leading to the player performing well. I'm hopeful (it's certainly not for sure with Cameron, ffs) that he'll be used similarly in Ottawa, with a better supporting cast.

I can't envision a scenario where Kris Russell could sign a contract with the Flames where he is making more money than TJ Brodie. That said, the same GM signed Deryk Engelland to a three year contract worth 2.9 million per season, so what do I know?
TBH, if you've got Gio, Brodie and Hamilton on your blue line and signed long-term any extra dollars that are lying around afterward should be dedicated to other areas of the team. If the Flames can indeed get a 1st or a good prospect for Russell that will give them some good ammunition to go out and trade for a sniper in the offseason.

Bout that goalie position though...

He was not used effectively by a succession of bad coaches, then was used effectively by a good one.

Should I go back and count how many times in recent weeks you've called Cameron an idiot?

Cameron is an idiot but even he has said that Dion slots in on the second pairing with Ceci.

As things stand, there is a rather large difference possession-wise between Ceci and Gardiner. How much of that was as a result of Ceci's partners up till now I suppose we're about to find out, but Dion's stats without Jake are pretty grim. Ceci's going to have to be who Ottawa's management think he is for this to work.

No time frame on Bettman's decision on Wideman appeal. It could, in fact, take several days according to a source.

Bettman knows his ABC's, but also his ABB's.

Dreger: #LAKings probably keeping a close eye on #Flames, #Canucks. "Would probably have interest in" Russell or Hamhuis as a rental.

Oilers send Nilsson to Bakersfield, call up Brossoit. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Ben Hutton is 7th in rookie assists. Ryan Miller ups his record to 9-1 against the Yotes.
